Thread Starter | Headphones Grado, Sennheiser
I am looking into getting some nice headphones for mixing late at night while everyone is sleeping. I have been looking at Grados' like the 325's and RS series or the Sennheiser 650 series. Anyone using these? What are your thoughts? Any other suggestions? Price is not an object. As long as they sound great. Thanks, Any information appreciated. Keith |

I have grado 125's. I tried out the higher end sennheisers when i bought them.... i don't know, the grado's just seemed.. more alive? I suppose if i were to mix in headphones... the grado's are the ones to do it in.

I've got the Grado RS-1s and they're amazing. I've never heard another headphone even come close in regard to detail. I'd never recommend mixing with headphones, but I use mine for reference very often. HTH.

Thanks for the replies. I have been a bit busy. I am still leaning toward the Grados. They seem a bit more quality than others. Looking at their response curves they look neutral enough. Maybe I'll just dig in and get a pair. If I don't like them I can always try others. Thanks, Keith |

I love my Grados (RS-80s - sure, I'd love to have better). I do NOT use these much for any sort of mixing - they make almost everything sound good. I use the when I need a microscope - noise reduction, restoration work, vinyl declicking - or for any casual headphone listening I do (at the office, for example). I sometimes use them when eq-ing a mix late at night when I have to be quiet.

Well, I'll balance the opinions here and say that I strongly favor the Sennheiser HD600 and HD650 over any Grados I've heard, including the top of the line. I think the Grados sound good but the presentation is much too immediate and hard to listen to. They are also the most uncomfortable headphones I've ever worn. The Sennheisers are much more like listening to "speakers on your ears" and as a result I find that I can actually eq and mix with them.
