How often do you turn-over/resell gear?

I always was a packrat: kept virtually everything I ever bought for the studio, but this winter I started cleaning house. Everything that hadn't been used in 5 years was going on the block, and others that were just plain deadweight also were cleaned out.

This put me in the position to experiment with some "new" gear. This newfound love doesn't seem to want to end, and I wonder how many others are doing the same thing.

1) how often do you turnaround gear that doesn't meet your criteria?

2) are you seeking 'old' gear, or new offerings?

3) are you constantly on the hunt for a 'magic' something?

4) are you generally 'happy' with your purchasing, or more often 'disappointed'? (use % please)

I'm interested in the turnover ratio most, so pls. focus on that!

Thx!

I've found through the past several years that I can be pretty brutal when it comes to gear. If it's not something I'm using all the time or if it's losing shootouts, it's usually gone soon after.

I recently off-loaded an AKG C4000B and a LDC Cascade to guitar center. I used the credit to buy an SM7B. If stuff isn't getting used much or plain sucks compared to other things I've got, it's outlived it's usefulness. The C4000B used to be my go-to vocal mic, but my Gefell UMT 70s eats it for lunch!

I've never done a shoot-out, so I never let gear go because it's "losing," but if a specific piece hasn't been getting too much use in the last 6 months or so I start thinking about maybe trading it something else. Most of the time I just keep stuff as I don't have too much outboard or mics so new gear for me is usually an addition rather than replacement.

I find that most of the gear I end up turning over is the gear that I did not take the time and do extensive research on or listen to first before buying. That is not always the case but most of the time this is the way it works out for me.

I think the never option should included those who do their homework and don't regret/want to sell any of their gear ( bar my first and last SM58)
