Your mix is muddy because your speakers are bright... find a set of monitors that isn't bright [as in when you play a record on them they almost sound dull] and you should be on your way to getting the results for which you quest. Peace.

While Fletcher does make a good point in terms of how 'too bright' or 'too dark' a monitoring setup can affect your mix, there's are more variables that come into play, which you'll find out once you do get some monitors (BM5A's are a great choice, btw, go for it), there may be issues with the mix itself, which opens an entirely new can of worms. Get some monitors, treat the room if needed, and then see about why your mix is "muddy". Could be many, many different reasons. |

Pistache, I have a number of pairs of Sony-7506's and they are definitely "hyped" in the upper mids, so a muddy mix wouldn't be too surprising. Compare them to a pair of Sennheiser HD 280's and you will see (hear) what I mean. But mixing on any headphones is going to make it really hard to get a mix to translate. I second Fletcher's comment that at least one set of your monitors should almost sound dull to you, and I think it is tough to mix without at least two monitor outputs. One that is flat (or dull), and another that is more present/brighter so you have some point of comparison. Stephen |
