| Another preamp question :) I need a stereo preamp .. The preamps should sound old and warm. I prefer colour/tone. I have 2 x Universal Audio 6176 that i enjoy a lot, but i need something with even more colour and with high gain (i use a lot of ribbon mics) I have looked at all the old stuff like siemens/tab/telefunken/ntp etc and i think that's the route for me.. it's confusing though with all the different numbers 676 72 276 etc.. can ya'll recommend me something to look for based on the info above.. (I also need a stereo EQ of the same type if you have any ideas:)) max is around 3000 USD my music is here in case you need to hear my sound myspace.com/djpeder PEDER; |

I bought a Mk II used out here in California. It was an eBay auction but I talked the owner into bringing it over to my room so I could hear it. I purchased it for X then spent Y with Geoff T to fix it and it cost me Z. I bought a Mk III a few days later and it cost me Z plus tax. Geoff made me feel better by saying I have a very early Mk II and it may be collectible someday. I wonder if that would ever be the case considering he put a lot of Mk III parts back into it. It does sound different, so I am glad I have both.As for a used one... keep watching the GS classifieds and eBay I guess. Otherwise write Geoff T and find out who the local dealers are. | |

| Geoff T would be better suited to answer, but he did end up replacing the power supply on my Mk II to a Mk III switching type. The nature of the transformer dictates optimal allignment for optimal noise cancellation. Mine seemed to be a bad transformer, so rather than find an old part, Aurora decided to upgrade to insure best S/N performance. If you can listen to a Mk II and it sounds nice and quiet, then the toroidal power supply is probably fine. As to the addition of the extra EQ points, I like the 400 for cutting the best so far, so that is on both units. As for the sound, I can't describe it yet. They are different, slightly, but that could be a cap that is dryer on the II than the III, who knows? So, if you found a nice Mk II, get it. BUT, if you find a nice MkIII, get it. They both have been superb additions to my arsenal. |

| Get the GTQ2 MK III... it's superior to the MK II. |
