Can anybode identify this mic? I've been offerede it for next to nothing, but don't wanna buy it if it's complete bullocks. It's a carbon mic right? What does it take to run it? Not phantom I assume?

If all else fails, you might try asking here: http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/ind...406cdbb7011b48 That gang are pretty much the librarians of arcane mic knowledge. |

how would you even plug a mic cable into it? i don't see any lead wires coming off the capsule anywhere. they don't appear to be running through one the "shockmount" springs even. i'd assume you don't just plug into the back of the capsule. it definately looks cool enough to have for a studio prop even if it's not functional. First off, I haven't a clue about the mic but it does look quant! If it is carbon it'll work like an ancient phone microphone (don't expect hi-fi) and, like the telephone mic, needs an activating current because the carbon varies resistance with signal on the diaphragm and modulates the voltage applied to it. It's not wired the same way as phantom power because it needs a current to pass though it... assuming that it is carbon. Are there a couple of screw terminals on the back? It doesn't matter a bit which way around the current is applied and phone systems (in the UK anyway) used 48 volts for the mic (plus a chunk of other circuitry!). The simplest circuit I can think of uses three connections... a dc supply through a limiting resistor and the carbon element to a common at the bottom and a signal take off via a blocking capacitor sharing the power common.
