AKG 414 B XLII or SHURE SM7B?

I'm into broadcast but i plan to record vocals from time to time. this i will be a starter mic for me until i can pick up a u195 stricty for vocals. which do you prefer?

The 414 (haven't heard the new XLs but have used the EB, B-ULS and TL-II) is sluttier and twice the price of an SM7 but see the SM7 vs SM57 thread on this forum for more feedback on the SM 7. Are you planning to use the mic for voice overs or singing (or both)?

i plan on using it for both and i did see the thread on the 7 vs. the 57... i know some broadcast facilities use an akg and i use an sm7 here at work. and i record vocals on it, and they sound pretty good. however, i was curious to see how the akg compared. i was thinking more the b uls version also.

They're two entirely different beasts, I've used both on vocals with great success. Either could be better than the other depending on the source.

Be a true gearslut and get both
