What are the options these days other than MOTU? Whats good and whats crap?

something like the MOTU MTPAV perhaps. I dont need all the bells and whistles though

not sure how easy to find the Edirol UM880 or UM550 are but solid interface and patch bay if you can get them.

i think the MOTU MIDI express XT also has some kind of patch bay without all the features of the MTPAV

We have an Edirol UM-880 in the studio. It does what it says on the tin, and its USB connectibility/configurability is pretty handy for routing external MIDI from within your software. We don't use it much, though.

And as far as I remember it must have an issue with not being able to distribute MTC by its design so if you are planning to use it for MIDI syncing harware controllers etc, investigate it first. I've never used it for that purpose so I can't remember exactly. Other than that, it works very nice for splitting/merging/distributing MIDI signals etc. Never caused any trouble and you could literally program it by touching a few buttons intuitively in manual mode as well, like "Patch" "Input 1" "Output 3" "Output5" "Output 8" and there you have sent Input 1 to Outs 3, 5 and 8 simultaneously. Or "Merge" "Input 3" "Input 6" "Input 7" "Output 4" and there you have merged the signals from 3, 6 and 7 straight down to Output 4 etc. Piece of piss. And it just works.

I don't have experience with other brands and models.

another shout for the UM-880. Awesome midi box!

It also has switchable dual usb inputs so in my studio I can switch it from my main computer over to my laptop (which runs my soft syths and an aditional sequencer) at literaly the touch of a button.

For cubase, if you are not afraid of abandonware and plan on staying on 32bit for a while, you cant do better than the old Midex interfaces. I run 2 8x8s and they are the tightest interfaces I have ever used
