Older versus Newer DBX units

I want to add a DBX compressor to my outboard arsenal and was wondering if the new units like the 160A can get snares to "pop" like the older 160 VU's.

Anyone compare the older units with the new ones?

there's another thread on this already.

I've gathered from it that none of the 160's quite live up to the VU model.

Actually, many people feel quite the opposite.

Short answer.... No.

Although, the newer 160X, XT and A are all very good and may be better on some things they don't sound like the older VU's (for better or worse). With that said, it shouldn't stop you from buying a newer one thinking you'll be missing out on some magical sound from the VU's.

So... for mixing use on kicks and snares, would the 160XT be a good choice? Or will it not be much better than plug-ins?
