It sounds kinda "doinky", for lack a better word. Sorta like when you mic the inside of a kick drum, complete with standing waves, etc. Moving the mic a tiny bit makes a huge difference, and of course, the separation is pretty awesome. You can also get an insane amount of attack by putting the mic super close to the head; just make sure to leave enough room for the head to give when the drummer hits it, otherwise he'll smack the mic. As for mic choice, I'd suggest you throw whatever you usually use on toms in there as a reference point. Once you hear what the inside mic is doing differently than you usual outside mic, consider using a different microphone. And don't forget to try an omni. |

It works, but the concert tom sound sounds, well, dated. It's come back in recent years with some the "low-fi" punkish bands, but it will pass again. Phil Collins always has loved the concert tom sound. YouTube - Phil Collins Gorilla Ad Cadburys Dairy Milk Sadly, the original link is broken: Cadbury Dairy Milk - Glass and a Half Full Productions

thanks guys, yeh i was hoping you would reference it to the inside of a kick drum. A project i have coming up would really benefit from having really punchy toms that dont resonate too much. but ill definitely mess around with different mics, positions and A/B with my standard above tom position cheers |

On the flip side, having mics inside the toms with both heads in place sounds pretty normal & gives good separation. Talking really about the May miking system...
