Figure 8's on drum overheads (ribbons R84)

anyone work with these?

I have the AEA R84's, and would like to try working them into overheads. I've always used the KM184's but I'm after something new.

any experiences?

thanks

Jason

While I haven't used the R84s, I've used figure-8 mics a bunch for drum overheads. I've used 4038s in a spaced-pair arrangement with some good results in a "not-so-bright" kind of way. I also love a Blumlein pair (crossed figure-8 mics in a coincident setup). It's probably my favorite quick overhead setup. (I usually like 414s for this.) MS setups can also be real cool, although that typically relies on a figure-8 and cardioid or omni mic.

Try them out and post your results.

I'll second the Blumlein recommendation - my favorite "no-brainer' OH is a Royer SF-12.

I use them all the time for drum overheads. They seem to take EQ very well. They can be a bit dark, but again I digress...

I use them in various positions around the kit, not nessecarily as a stereo pair. I find it a little easier to balance the kit with the 'mutli- mono' approach. I too have considered using them in a Blumlein pattern...next gig, maybe. Albeit, I employ the Blumlein technique quite often.

I recently elected to put up the R84s in the Blumlein configuration (in my room) approximately 18' from the performers. The application was for tracking background vocals (one male/one female).

The chain used was this:

R84s(Blumlein)>API 512 x 2> Buzz SOC 1.1 ( 2:1, Auto Attack, medium-fast release, 3db reduction on peaks)

Believe it or not, the band I was tracking was a pseudo-punk band....I had no idea it would work, but hey...

I had R84s in a non-scientifically-spaced pair over Zigaboo Modeliste's drumkit at the Coast Recorders AES party. Very nice. I agree they take EQ very nicely. Also used a couple on the guitar cabinets.

I now want a pair
