They are decent....I'd give them a B minus on kick. They have a hard sound without a lot of low frequencies (even in "M" mode). Using them only by themselves will very likely require a low frequency boost (subjective of course). And IMO, they don't have nearly the same amout of detail as a good condenser, nor do they take EQ as well.

I have always loved them on toms. Never used it on kick but it could be worth a try.

I have heard of people doing this.

Let us know what you think.

421 is actually my preference on kick. A lot of people find them a bit "basketball" sounding but that's what I like, especially on hard rock/ metal tracks.
But that's just my take, I'm still learning!

For me they're great on toms but not beefy enough for a solo kick. It would probably be great used on the beater side with a speaker mic (ns 10, Yamaha sub kick etc.) out in front of the kick.

Its my personal favorite for snare as I like a thick, low mids heavy snare sound that a 57 can't do.

I like 'em for old school rock sounds (some kind of Neil Young). I'd take the 421 in the kick and someting for the bass outside the kick.
My set up:
Kick in: 421
Kick out: Royer or At4050 or speaker

"hard" is a great description of a 421 on kik. I haven't tried it in a while but I will now. That's one thing I like about these forums, they remind me to shake things up now and again.

Mixing ITB? Just because you're not good at it, doesn't mean it sucks.

thanks for the replies,

I have a U99 or the TLM 103 that can team up with it.
