Gordon Model Five

Grant Carpenter was at AES with his new Model Five preamp. $900 less than the Model Three and supposedly sounds even better.

My order is in, four channels for Q1 delivery.

Higher rail voltages than the Model Three, yet less expensive due to the use of fiberglass boards (instead of the ceramic boards used in the Model Three) and the remote is now priced separately. The single channel Model Four has a gain control onboard (but will also work with the remotes.)

Grant can explain better and should have info on his website shortly.

Gordon, BG1

Yeah,

I am also very interested in the new Gordon. I would love to try one with my setup, but the only way is to buy. There goes the braces-for-my-future-kids--buck-toof fund.

He(Grant Carpenter of Gordon Audio) seemed to be a hell of a nice guy at AES. Very nice, and very willing to explain anything and everything about the details of his preamp.

Did you guys take a look inside the thing?!?!? It's the closest that preamp topology has come to resembling a piece of fine art. We were joking about how the top should be plexiglass so that the guts are always on display. Nice.

He also mentioned that it is on the new 3D audio preamp comparison.

Plush(a bit off topic), I just got a BG1! I know that you have been raving about them for some time now. Just out of curiosity, do you find yourself using that pre for all kinds of apps, or only remote classical stuff? So far I've only tried it with my voice using a U195....Super smoooooove. It's definitely very musical, without any obvious or in-your-face coloration. Also, very open sounding! Can't wait to try it on small acoustic ensembles with a stereo setup, as well as piano, classical guitar, violin, etc.

Do you have some favorite mics for pairing with the BG1?

Hello Oz,

Super news about the BG#1. Yes, we use it regularly with excellent success. We only do classical here so that is what we use it on. In other words, we're using it on singers, string quartets, orchestra main pairs, spot mics, and ambience mics.
Also on harps and brass ensembles.

ALWAYS delivers.

We are a house of Schoeps, so that is what we have used it with. Beautiful with Schoeps CMC64 and CMC621. Also we use it to amplify M-50's. However, the smooth sound of the BG#1 is further complemented by the Schoeps smooth sound. Together they are a match.

We plan to buy more Broadhurst Gardens mic amps because I am now convinced that they are among the top units out there.
Our other first choice is the Crookwood Paintpot (the bucket) and the EAR 624 two channel tube mic amp. Crookwood is the "cleanest," and BG#1 and the EAR sound about the same.

Hi Plush,

How would you compare the Millennia HV-3 and Great River MP2 to the ones you mention?

Sorry, I have nothing to tell you about these mic amps. We do not use them. Millenia is known to be good, but too laboratory clean for me.

I will stick with the above choices.

I'm using the Godron now, both 2 channel and the single channel...
Am looking for something just as great but smaller.
