Audix D6

Sm57 -(=dont laugh..) It can work in a pinch
Royer 121 or 122 using the backside or use frontside with a windscreen to prevent a blown ribbon.

And I would buy them in pairs... you never know when you're going to get an old school metal drummer with 2 kicks.
If I had to pick one, it would be hard. It would depend on who's getting the low end real estate... the bass or the kick.
If you want your kick to be the bottom and aim the bass higher I would go with the Beta 52 on kick (which I think shines around 42Hz)... if you want the reverse I would go for the D112 (which I think shines a bit more around 100Hz).
In my opinion D112 is a more versatile mic... i.e. floor tom, and bass cab... but for sub-thump the Beta 52 is the fatter of the two.

I like using two mics...
Beta52 + Beta91 (52 gets the lows/low mids and the 91 gets the click)
or
SM57 + homemade subkick (57 for the click and subkick for the rest)
I've tried lots of combos, and this is what I like. Normally, I'll end up replacing the kick completely though because of the style of music I'm normally working on.

I like my D6, it's a bit scooped sounding. It naturally has a deep thump and tight click sound. When I want something more traditional, the D4 sounds good (I call it the poor man's MD421). If you want something boomier, a Beta 52. If you want something middier, a D112. If you want something flatter, Heil PR40.

Ribbons are the shit.......
especially one's you can't destroy.
C&T "el-diablo"; No questions about it.....hands down the best kick microphone I've ever used. Its also a f#cken KILLER bass microphone when you want the same "air" to move in the control room, the way it does in the live room.
I also dig the Mag Mic MM2006.......that thing is obese and the sheer enormity of its depth is GODLY sounding!

My favorite is an MD421 on the beater and a nice LDC out front.
Also use my homemade speaker mic.
For heavy rock the fastest easiest thing is to stick a D6 in there.

I like all the suggestions.
Never heard of some... El Diablo?
I guess the goal is to have a go to standard. Something that will work on the most bands, the most styles, the most of the time.
Thanks

I use a D6 in the kick and a U195 outside. The D6 is probably the only mic that was really designed to go in the kick. The scoopiness changes depending on placement

Thanks | Soundwave Research Laboratories / Crowley and Tripp Microphones :: Ribbon Microphones
Some of the best sounding ribbons on the planet!
The "el diablo" is voiced in a way that achieves the sound of a MD421 inside the drum on the beater head [click and smack], and a FET U47 on the out head [breath and girth].....all by sticking this thing inside the drum. Its beefy as hell and certainly laughs in the face of any "foot" trying to destroy the bass drum. Punishment is not a suitable way of describing what this microphone is capable of handling. A better term would be devastation. |

I was at a club concert not too long ago and I was very impressed with the kick sound. During a break I went on stage and saw that it was an EV mic. I don't remember the model, but it was short, black and cylidrical, similar to the Audix drum mics. It had a great snap to it.

Electrovoice N/D 868.
I chose it over B52 and D112. Sounded more ready, round and not so hyped. I do mostly radio pop/indie. |

Inside: Beta 91, MD421, SM57, Beta 57, E604, E602
Outside: Beta 52. That's the only one I use outside, the bottom is untouchable. Even a Subkick doesn't get that low, although they sound pretty cool, too.

the d6 is pretty solid on kick. especially if you put it about halfway through the port (if there is one), keeping it level with the beater, and aim it slightly downward towards where the head meets the drum. awesome sound w/ little or no eq required

I was recently in the market for a kick mic myself. I've used the D112 and Beta 52, you know, the "industry standards".
Those mics will show you why the industry needs to raise their standards.
Do what I did: check out Tuesday Testers: Front End Audio Gear Listening Thread - Front End Audio Forums and listen to the kick samples. I was sold on the Audix D6 from the first time I heard it, and I'll refuse to use anything else until someone can PROVE there's something better out there.
I know that mics and sounds are all subjective, but as far as I'm concerned, anyone that says a D112 or Beta 52 is better than a D6 can kiss my ass.

| Must say, this sold me big time. Nice on the snare and the Guitar and bass there. The thing is, it did sound awesome there, but mostly for rock. Remember each kick drum is different as is each player. I know this is low end but I think it's good too have variety. The M88 is great for a mellower sound just outside the hole. I like the 421 for a bit more attack slightly less bottom than the 88. I own a d12e but have yet to hear it sounding desirable for me. The same as the d112. There is something not right about the 52 to me. I'd rather have the 602.

TUNING, but yeah.....
for slower songs, kick tunnel and some LDC (whatever is left) at the end of the tunnel. sometimes allings ITB
also for slower songs, a pzm inside the kick
both of these options with an audix D6
for faster rock, just D6, but i usually have an LDC next to it just in case something happens to it (cable slips or something)
i wouldnt want to be without something for kick in worst case scenario, and its not like im without i/o

recorded drums for a band today. 421 on the inside and a CAD KBM412 on the outside. Sounds really great and I haven't done anything to it yet. I've also had some luck putting an i5 on the outside between 1 or 2 feet from the kick head. But yeah, FET47 is always a great way to go if there is one available.

57 is good cause it leaves room for the bass. First two CSN&Y albums are the great example of this. ' |

Electrovoice N/D 868 also (inside), Subkick (outside)
Hate the D112 on kick, love it on bass cabs where the hyped top end actually captures something musical...
