sterilizing headphones?

I'm wondering about sterilizing headphones - what would you use to do this? -I've never really heard of anyone doing this but more lately I'm thinking of the last sweaty greasy drummer who wore the cans when I pass them to the first-time classy lady singer the next session...

step
1. clean the dirty ones with mild soap and water, if they're detachable, this is more easy, and tell the guy to wash himself next time
2. buy a new set for her

I usually spray the tracking cans down with Lysol between sessions...

Sterilisation in not possible and it is not necessary. Clean it with a slightly humid microfibre cloth. Using disinfectant may damage the synthetics on your headphone.

I have a coupla dozen MoreMe cans that are used for tracking... even if Lysol did any cosmetic damage, it wouldn't matter since they're essentially disposable!

But even so, I've been doing this for years without so much as a blemish.......

They're tracking cans - they don't have to be exceptional...

They're for times I don't want to have to worry when the bloody lead guitarist throws them across the room in frustration while cutting take 67 of the solo he supposedly can play in his sleep............

Well, I'd normally agree with you, but Al Jardine, Joss Stone, Widespread Panic, and a lot of other major talents seem to like them, so we seem to be outnumbered.

Actually, it's very possible, but totally unnecessary.

You could gas them with ethylene oxide. Won't damage the cans at all.

You could always make your own sanitizer from bleach and water. Works for the restaurant world, so why not the recording one?. Its something like 1 bottle cap to 10 litres or so. It sure is a lot cheaper going then using Lysol wipes which basically do the same thing.

I prefer the boil method too,...throw in the bass players dead strings and kill two birds with one stone.

Boil 10 minutes
Turn down heat
Simmer for 5 minutes
Add salt to taste

Ha!! Ha!!

I used to work at a BIG Studio in Hollywood, and they made a special point to me, that this was part of my job, as the Studio was frequented by a lot of people with Jerri Curl juice in their hair and the next person putting on the phones wouldn't like it.

I "think" I can say all that .. anyway it sure was a lot of fun.
(not cleaning the headphones)

Ooooooh ... I just used the denatured alcohol despenser by the tape machines.

If you need actual sterilization, the way to do it is with Ethylene Oxide gas (AKA - "ETO") as previously mentioned. Plenty of medical devices are sterilized this way, including transducers, but ETO is far too expensive and requires a special chamber and aeration afterwards.

A wipe down with alcohol is a good start, and even soap kills plenty of bacteria. I would not use bleach, as it attacks plastics and foams and might ruin them.

Haha! Man, 12-13 years old on the bus going to school during the disco days in New Orleans.... I watched the scenery go by as if it were filmed through cheesecloth due to the Jericurl™ on the windows.

Smelled nice, however.....
