I just got word that my good friend Dave Carpenter, bass legend, passed away last night or this morning from a heart attack.
I will miss you, Dave. It is a sad, sad day.

Man, what terrible news! Dave was such a monster player! Years ago, I was called to play electric bass on 4 tracks for a jazz fusion project. I was pretty nervous to begin with as Frank Gambale was the guitarist. So, I walk into the studio (late, as usual) and I see/hear Dave Carpenter, Frank Gambale, Steve Weingart and Brett Chassen THROWIN' DOWN through the glass! The bass tone and note choices blasting from the mains was simply stunning. I wanted to leave. After their last take of a particular tune, I walked up to Dave (whom I'd never met, but recognized) and said "What the hell am I doing here? There's been a major mistake. You should be cutting this album completely!". To which he replied "You're here for a reason, just do what you do" and smiled. He was the coolest guy. He knew I was pretty nervous (I was 25 at the time) but made me feel comfortable and therefore I was able to survive the session. He even took time to give me some pointers regarding tone, triads and voicings. That day had a tremendous impact on my life. What a huge loss...

Very sorry to hear! I worked with Dave on a few tracking dates. Great guy! Last time I saw him it was with Peter Erskine, and Alan Pasqua. Amazing trio. He sure will be missed by many.

I'm truly saddened to hear this. Just a few months ago I got to meet Dave when he played on a session with a good friend of mine, Dick Halligan. That session also had Peter Erskine on drums. Needless to say, it was an amazing experience to be a fly on the wall. Dave was an incredible player and all-around nice guy. He will be missed as musicians as talented as he was don't come around very often.
RIP, Dave.
Cheers,

Don

What a huge loss.... I worked with Dave a few times on various live performances. He was always easy to get along with and the level of his playing was top notch. While I don't know his age, he also seemed quite young for something like this- too young, really.
He will be missed.
