Presonus Digimax 96k - help needed.. I think I was ripped off

To make a long story short:

I got a Presonus Digimax 96K off ebay, advertised as a second hand and fully functional. However, AD conversion is not working. I tested it in different modes, as a slave and as a master unit, mic pres and limiters work ok, but the converters are dead. There's no digital output from the unit and no light in the optical light pipe.

i noticed, that LED Nr 1 (+5 V) goes off when I connect the PSU to the unit. Is there any chance the problem is in the PSU?

Probably it. No power to the converter section...Does the phantom power work?

Yep, phantom works. Everything works, except for the converters. the +5 LED is on when the PSU is unplugged, and as soon as I plug it into the unit - bam, it's off. I hope it's a pSU issue, cuz otherwise I'm pretty much f*cked - can't return the unit.

Maybe call PreSonus and inquire about this problem. Sometimes ( sometimes...it's happened to me once or twice.....), if it's not something very expensive, the vendor will repair it free, if you handle shipping.. Good luck...

Everything on Ebay is broken, I thought you would have learned that by now.
After all, why do you think it's on Ebay, where the buyer can't inspect the goods first?

Hey, I have a Digimax 96k. Take into account that it only works at 44.1/48 k over adat lightpipe. No more than that. No SMUX adat. If you set up your project or soundcard at 96 k, and try to record over adat, the converters will not work. It was a shock for me to discover that. Presonus = shitty company.
Hope that helps.

oh mang
i bought tons of shit off ebay.. i sell stuff sometimes, too. it has always been like 99% of okay transactions, but I had three crappy ones in a row, lately. bought a Mesa Recto which arrived almost in parts - it wasn't broken, and it works ok, but circuit arrived apart from chassis.. then a broken camera and now this presonus.

edit: i posted this @ harmobny central, too, and some guy from PreSonus took time to register there and is trying to help me out. Cool!

i record @ 48K, and I knew about this limitation, so that's ok with me. Thanks for input, though.

The fact that the Digimax 96...which is the oldest product in the Digimax lineup...does not run via Lightpipe at 96kHz does not mean that Presonus is a shitty company. At the time the product was released S/MUX was still fairly new and uncommon, and at the time of its release the main products that were in its target market (the Digi001 and the original MOTU 2408) did not do 96 kHz via Lightpipe, and even today none of Digidesign's interfaces do. Presonus's more recent 96kHz-capable Digimax units do indeed do 96 kHz via Lightpipe as well...but in any case, they never advertised or implied that it did do 96 kHz via Lightpipe...

Being in the LA area you probably have noticed there are lots of local gear auctions. Many allow the buyer to pick up. Many post e-mail addresses and telephone numbers just so someone can check it out first.

I have had a couple of bad eBay experiences, but only as the seller. Sold my Focusrite Red 1 six days ago. The buyer writes me to let me know he will pay as soon as his M-147 sells. Sigh. Then he offers a trade instead.
My auction says UPS shipping only, US sales only. Now Mr. UK wants to know why it will cost $230 to ship.

About the same time I auctioned a True Systems Precision 8 and a couple of Shure mics (SM-98, SM-91). The same buyer, Bart, bought all of it. He called, came over to pick it up. Turns out we have many common associates. The buyer does the sound for Jimmy Kimmel. I have two friends in the band. Bart suggested I come out and hang one day as "his friend" and he will introduce me to the band as someone wanting to get out of the music scene and into TV.
