| Pultec EQP-1A Program Equalizer for UAD-1 Mackie Releases Pultec EQP-1A Program Equalizer for UAD-1 Electronic reproduction of classic Pultec hardware equalizer WOODINVILLE, Wash. (Jun. 21, 2002) -- UAD-1 cardMackie Designs Inc. has released the Pultec EQP-1A Program Equalizer (included in version 2.2.2) for the UAD-1 Powered Plug-Ins family. The UAD-1 and Powered Plug-Ins were developed by Universal Audio Inc. and are marketed and distributed by Mackie Designs Inc. Version 2.2.2, which includes the Pultec EQ, is available as a free update from both www.mackie.com and www.uaudio.com. The Pultec EQP-1A Plug-In is a faithful electronic reproduction of the classic hardware equalizer. The Pultec EQ has long been a choice of mastering engineers for its ability to bring out individual frequency ranges without significently altering other frequencies. The sophisticated modeling technology used by Universal Audio in the Pultec EQP-1A plug-in captures both of these characteristics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Advertisement ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "I used the Pultec plug-in recently during 5.1 repurposing of the Hip-Hop classic film Wild Style, comments Bobby Owsinski of Surround Associates. "The Pultec gave me that same unique shimmering hi-end and powerful bottom that I get from the hardware unit that just can't be duplicated by any other EQ plug-in. " The orginal Pultec hardware box. (click image for larger view)The engineering team at Universal Audio says every revered sonic nuance of this vintage processor is faithfully maintained. All of the unique features of the original hardware EQ are included in the plug-in, including the separate boost and attenuation controls, the smooth, sweet top end, and the ability to dial in seemingly dangerous amounts of boost. All front panel controls are included on the graphical user interface, including accurate modeling of the original knob tapers. And, even though it operates at a high internal sample rate for maximum accuracy, the load on the UAD-1 does not increase -- even when processing audio at the highest sampling rates. The end result is a plug-in model that reproduces the measured equalization and signal path characteristics to within a fraction of a single dB mean error. | Ok.... but how's it sound???? I'll tell you what I think, f---in' great, UA nailed it. After serious evaluation and hard core A/Bing against a Manley Pultec Type EQP-1A, we sold the Manley. The best part we can now use multipe pultecs, and the sale of EQP allowed us to purchase the new API 2500 2buss, but I'll find the thread dedicated to that piece, rather than shout praise and worship for it here. Anyway, in my opinion, the UA Card is best bang for buck in DSP right now. Also, I'm curious, has anyone A/B'ed the UA against a vintage EQP-1A? best, robp www.witchdoctorrecording.com |

| I have the UAD1 (with Logic on a titanium with magma) and It's much better than the bomb factory (on Pro Tools) for the Pultech AND for the compressors too . |

| Lives for gear | It's funny what people can do to convince themselves of how "good" something sounds when it's inexpensive surrounded by a lot of hype. The UA Pultec is a good plug in but it doesn't sound like a 'real' high quality piece of gear. Great for a plugin, bad for a rack piece. Just my $.02.

| Nathan, The only funny thing I did to convince myself of how good the UA EQP-1A sounds, was to A/B it against my Manley EQP-1A in several mixes...... after several days and much to my suprise, I ended up selling the Manley because I liked the plug more. Now in your opinion, it doesn't sound like a 'real' high quality piece of gear, I think it does and that's my opinion not subscription to hype. I use 'real' high quality pieces of gear every day (API, neve, telefunken, etc.) and the UA plug fits in beautifully. robp |

Nathan, what app and hardware are you using the UAD-1 in? Maybe something's weird there. I just had a producer who brought over a Tube Tech SMC2B multiband compressor to tweak on a problem female vocal I was mixing for him on Paris. It sounded killer, no doubt. He spent $4K on it, mostly for her voice. But we ended up using the vocal chain I had *inside* Paris using the UAD plugs, after A/Bing in an apples to apples gain matched scenario. He was shocked, but a big enough guy to go with the sound that worked. Which was the plugs. Not the first time I've had that happen with the UAD stuff. No need to "convince" myself. I'm playin' for keeps on label projects and the budget's there to own or rent the hardware. If the hardware sounds better, I use it. The UAD-a rocks hard, IMO. Even up against the hardware. I still haven't heard a plugin verb that killed me, though. Regards, Brian T | |
