'65 Twin RI Question

Hello, I recently pulled the outer two tubes (Groove Tubes 6L6Bs) out of my Reissue Twin and also disconnected one of the speakers. I was hoping to decrease the wattage of the amp so I could crank the input to get some tube crunch, which I am unable to get normally because it is simply too loud and will not break up. When I crank the input I get a loud hum which was not there before I pulled the tubes. Any suggestions on what I could do to fix this? Also would it damage the amp if I used a THD Hot Plate with the tubes pulled to further reduce the volume? I would probably be better off selling the Twin and getting something with less wattage but I will regret it.

I've had a number of Twins over the years and presently have an older blackface. To me the Twin has great tone, sparkle, and power. I would never run to my Twin for tube crunch. Be that as it may, you should be able to remove a couple of tubes and without causing a problem. Perhaps one of the remaining tubes is bad. Try changing out the remaining power tubes with the tubes you pulled. The Twin speakers are wired in parallel so you should be able to just disconnect the wires and make shure that they aren't touching anything. I really like the sound of driving a 12 inch Jensen hard.

Rather than selling your nice Twin pick up a used Orange Tiny Terror. You can use the speakers in your Twin. With my Tiny Terror I like the sound I get driving one of my Jensens better that the Orange Celestion speaker.

Would it be possible to have the twin running one speaker and have the tiny terror powering the other speaker and get an amp switching device to switch between clean and distorted tones. That would be an ideal setup. Thanks for the advice btw.
