I always loved the tone on the American Pearl "S/T" CD. It's pure hard rock with a modern twist.

Oh, and Danzig's "II: Lucifuge". The band all sounded awesome in that record, and I especially love the songs in which there are no additional guitars when John Christ was soloing.

love that thread!

here's my contribution.

ok, Black Sabbath is the classic!

here's something that should please Black Sabbath fans:

what use to be called Heavy Metal is now Stoner Metal...:

ELECTRIC WIZARD
Electric Wizard on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Videos

now for some modern heavy, forget distorsion, go for amplifier worship!

a clean and loud tube amp with a Muff or old RAT...I can't stand the cold metallic/plastic distorsion sound of BOSS...I even prefer a crank overdrive to keep the harmonics...BYOC Mighty Mouse (vintage Rat coming in...)

here's my inspirations (Sludge, Doom, Funeral...so many):

ATAVIST

SALOME

MONARCH!

MOSS

my best Doom Death band:

COFFINS

even EARTH with a clean tone is heavier than any softer band.

EARTH on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Videos

and here's my friend's band, doesn't get more doom than this, I'm working on the mix for their up coming release...2 bass, and one guitar all in bass amps...got low-end?! the latest mix should give a better idea of their true tone...

GHÄST on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Videos

And a good bass tone helps but I play LesPaul baritone in a bass amp & guitar amp and I can live without a bass player for now...unless he has a Ampeg 8x10 or Sunn BH215...I've got two 2x15''...all 80w 1970 Sunn Amps (6550/KT88), the true era of rock sound...no master volume, just pure clean, rich and full bodied loud tone, you can make it sound like whatever you want with a good warm dirt and a graphic EQ.

i use a 421 on bass amp, and SM57 on the guitar amp but I'd like to try the 609 or Beta52...it's just a challenge to capture that amazing sound! it's always better live...so you can feel the spl...!

Opeth overdrive tones on the Blackwater Park album, works particularly well in the song Bleak with acoustic over lays.

Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power particularly the leads on Hollow.

I loved all the guitar tones on Tool's 10,000's Days and Lateralus. (APC showcase a variety of awesome tones too!).

Overdriven guitars on Mnemic's albums Mechanical Spin Phenomena and Audio Injected Soul - Particularly the tracks Deathbox and Ghost.

Also, I have always quite liked the nice breathy but tight crunchy overdrive tones Alice In Chains achieved for tracks such as Them Bones, Angry Chair and Would?

I find capturing a great overdrive tone is one of the hardest things to get right when I am tracking and mixing. Very difficult to get the right mic placement. Always experimenting.

Nirvana Nevermind without a doubt. Sounds massive without sounding juvenile.
