Hey I am hoping for some help. I am a chorus teacher and I have recently started to record some of my students. I am using digital performer and a 828mkII. I want to be able to track a good sound to be mixed at another studio. I have an understanding of Mics, tubes, eq's, Mic pre's, and compressors... for I used to be in a band that made a few albums, but that was in the old tape days. What confuses me the most is the coverters. Will the 828 prevent me from getting a good sound, regardless of my externals? Once again I don't plan on mixing on my computer. I'll go out for that. I just want to be able track on my own. Thank you in advance.

A couple of guys often bring me stuff to mix for them and they record on that exact unit. acoustic guitars and vocals only. Sounds fine to my ears. Sure, you can pay as much as you want for converters, but their recordings sound nice to me. I'm of the opinoin that the mic and preamp would have to be the place I'd drop more money first (of course I don't know what your chain is). If you use that 828 with a fairly decent vocal chain and are careful, you'll get a plenty clean recording IMHO.

Thank you for your response. I am still deciding on what to purchase. I have a a limited budget. I am planning on that Soundelux 195 for a mic. As far as preamp, would I be better off tracking with a Great River into my 828 mkII or getting a Lunatec V3 or Mini Me that combines a preamp with better converters, then going into my 828. Thank you.

Ooooh...I'm thinking the 195/GR/Mini Me sounds pretty hard to beat...maybe a little over your budget, though. Might be worth adding the Mini Me later if it's too big a pill right now. I always prefer a little bit of a wait to get the real deal. How's the monitor chain? I realize you're not mixing on your rig, but I'll bet that you'll start to do complete projects at some point, no? Plus it's pretty important to hear what you're doing with regard to mic placement etc. |

Okay... I think I need to take a step back. I was thinking, Mini Me or Lunatec so I could get the preamp converter thing going. Please help me with a set up. I have a G4 tower, and a 828 mkII. I want to be able to record quality vocal tracks on a limited budget, and I am planning on mixing at a real studio. I will get a quality mic and preamp. I can dump the 828, What would anyone suggest to get my analog signal to digital into my G4, with quality in mind. I really just need one or two tracks. Thank you once again.
