how do you like the chandler germanium tone control/EQ?

i have the germanium and pre and am loving it. thinking the Germ EQ might make a worthy additiooin. im wondering if i'd be in good shape with it as my only (first) EQ? what is your experience with it? is it too ballsy as my only EQ? what are some other options?

Meldar,

that's a difficult question to answer without knowing what you're looking for out of an eq. If you want an all around "go to" eq you might find that the germ eq is slightly limited when any sort of precision work/carving is necessary. It's a wonderful eq and certainly would pair up nicely with your germ pre but I might try something a little less limited as a first eq. Once you get that taken care of I strongly suggest following up and grabbing the germ eq - ultra thick and rubbery while still maintaining a great bite.

Try the Speck ASC, it's flexible and doesn't lead a drastic sonic signature

I think it's very appropriately titled as a "Tone Control"...it's not a surgical tool and I don't see it as a corrective tool (although depending on what needs to be "corrected" I'm sure it could be used as such), but I see it more as a creative tool. It may or may not be a good choice for a first/only EQ depending on what kind of music you're doing, but the number of different sounds you can coax out if the thing is pretty impressive...

The Tone Control is a beast of an equalizer! I have hard time calling it an equalizer, but it surely is one. It's the only EQ I'll patch on metal electric GTR's [or just heavy electric GTRS] before I even hear the tone/amplifier cabinet and microphone. I know its going to help get MORE cut through and "BONE" to the sound, [if that makes any sense] Its an animal for tone shaping and "tone bending" Not unlike the Curve Bender, but its WAY more aggressive in a good way.

I also find it extremely useful with bass applications when there needs to be more "growl" and bite to the note. I find it works exceptionally well for snare and kick for the same reasons. Its not you're traditional EQ......but I have used it for gently tightening up tracks from vocals, to acoustic GTR.....its definitely a character piece. A little goes a long way [in context]

If I had a TG-2 and a 121 mashed up against a GTR cab [of any kind] for aggressive rock [and roll] I would want a TC nearby.

Big problem with this monster is that you need 2 on the master bus... that is a great way to enhance itb mixes I think. I don't have them yet, but worked in a studio that had this set up... and now I want 2... damn....

Perhaps wait till wade gets the Maximus out, and invest in 2 of those....... oohhh.

At my studio I have API 5500, 4 specks, love them all, and I've used the Germ EQ at another studio and I'm already saving some cash to get one of those... they work amazingly well on Kick Drums... it's a great piece of gear

Its a very cool eq and sounds fantastic but it's not what you might have as your only eq, and it can be too noisy for some applications in my experience.

You might try Great River, Portico, Speck or LilFreq EQs, as all they will be more universal EQs.
But Tone Control is really OK.
