Tame high mids in live room?

Hi all,
My live room is giving me some problems with high mids (especially on overheads).
It is 16ftx16ft with 8ft ceiling. I have made a few bass traps around it (4" rigid fiberglass covered in burlap), but am still needing to notch out around 7k on the overheads. It is a good kit and cymbals (Sonor S Class and Zildjian A Customs) miced with 414s.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

7k is pretty high up. I'd bet even a hung blanket could tackle that.

If you have a problem with overheads, that sounds like you need absorption on the ceiling above the microphones.

Keeping in mind that I can only attempt a guess...I'd say that quote #2 could have a lot to do with quote #1.

I will almost always use 414's somewhere if I've got them (at the very least, put 'em in omni and stick 'em wherever)...but "C414" and "7k" are two things that don't always jive with one another, in my experience.

Try a different pattern on the mic (pattern selections = the world's simplest and most invisible "equalizers"). Try moving the drumkit a few feet in whatever direction. Try the mics a little more off-axis to take some focus off of the upper octaves.

The suggestion of light, basic HF absorption (packing blankets) on the ceiling isn't a bad one either, and can take some "wash/ugly" out of cymbals very quickly. Really, I've never been in a room with sub-8-foot ceilings that DIDN'T benefit from some sort of absorption above a kit. But before you run around looking for ways to hang blankets on your ceiling...try moving the mics or the drums.

have you tried ... not using overheads, but more like spot mics with rooms, or maybe a more front facing overhead position.

do you have gobos?

if so, maybe absorbant side in behind the drummer might help a bit.

Thanks a lot guys.
I will try all of these suggestions starting with putting acoustic tiles on the ceiling.
Will report back next week with before and after overheads mp3s if anyone's interested.
