SMiLE

I suprised no one here has started a thread about this album. Or maybe I missed it...

I remember running into *****house music the day it came out looking for the big display with SMiLE cds piled on it. But it wasn't there. So I asked "Where is SMiLE!" they replyed "Huh?" Slightly sad, I decided to look in the 'Brian Wilson' section and there I found a few copies. I'm very suprised that this wasn't more of a big deal for more people.

Anyone know how it's selling in places other than Santa Cruz?

I personally love the album. I think on a sonic level it's superb. It's a great melting point between Wilson/Spector 60's production and modern technology.

What do ya'll think?

someone started playing it at work the other day and it took me a while to notice it wasn't the original. i think they did a really good job with it, i'm glad they didn't do the entire thing with midi (although i think there are a few digital synths unfortunately) and i'm glad they didn't modernize it with awful nu-metal guitars or hip hop beats or whatever. wilson's voice is a little raw in places but overall i like it a lot more than i thought i would.

I've heard it a few times now and it's quite nice and listenable. It's easy enough to tell it's an older Brian Wilson's voice in lots of places, but there's still something about it that rings true for me. It's a little slicker than I'd like in places...there'a sort of 21st century "sheen" on it that many new records have. But ultimately I'm just excited to hear this record after hearing about it for so many years.

I'm also happy for Brian Wilson since this record was sort of this sad albatross for him for so long. It's got to feel really good for him to have this off his chest.

NPR had a little "All things considered" segment on the making of the album the other night. Highly recommended to listen to:
