I need advice regarding mixing to a laptop Here's my current setup. I'm running Digi's 192 AES Out to a Masterlink AES In, AES Out of the ML to a DAC-1 AES In, DAC Analog Out to monitors. What I want to do is remove the Masterlink from the chain, replace it with a G4 Laptop. What do I need to purchase in order to come out AES from the 192 and connect it to the laptop? Also, what program would you suggest for two track recording? Peak? Your help would be appreciated. Thanks Dean

I must confess that while I love Peak for a number of tasks, I have never been able to get it to record my input. this is over several versions of the program, on a couple of different hardware setups. I always end up recording into something else and then opening the file in Peak Maybe I have a mental block or something YMMV

Hey Dean, I'll ask the obvious question - why do you need to record your mix on another DAW/recorder? I use PTHD accel and monitor using a DAC-1 from the AES out. When I mix I do a bounce to disk and that's that. I presume you have your reasons for avoiding this route - do tell, cheers, Ruairi

Hi Ruairi, Two reason's I'm taking the laptop route. 1) I never liked bouncing a mix. It never quite sounds the same once its been bounced. You lose some of the detail in the verbs, and the hi-end isn't as clean as my original mix. Is isn't by much, but I can hear the difference. 2) I have quite a few modules that are mixed live to 2 track. I could buss them to an audio track, but when working for TV, I get asked for a variation of my original mixes, so it's easier for me to go directly to 2 track. But my main reason to mix outside the box is primarily sound.
