Yeah, it would be really interesting to know how these two units compare.

Anyone even compared VD's rack pre's to MA5?

Haven't heard the MA5, but the M581 is one of the most colored preamp's I've heard in the 500 series format. Its pretty punchy for drums, and has a "roundish" top [transient wise] for vocals, and strings. Definitely nails the "N" vibe.

even more colored than the germanium? just curious because i do love the amount of color the germ brings to the table, but the 500 series version is not recommended for the lunchbox -but i digress. we definitely need someone to post some clips, at LEAST of the vintage design, because i have not been able to find a clip anywhere on here.

Might be tough to get a direct comparison. Think about it.. If I have MA5's, why would I want/need/have M581's..?? Likewise, if I had M581's.. You see where I'm going with this..

Gotta find a few peps that have the different boxes to get together & compare..

I found the MA5 takes a few steps upward with great compressors, but i understand that a lot of pres can do the very same thing, still no help with the VD.

The transient response is slower, "gooier", whereas the Germ is very open and forward in the midrange. Its very dense in the midrange, I don't think of it as "round" sounding, I think of it as aggressive. The M581 is slower, more like the lighting bolt "N" punch and 3D definition, with a mellow smooth top.

I'll see what I can do about some sound clips........
