FW drive format

I run PTLE 5.1.1 on OS9.2.2, record mostly to an external FW drive.

Just got a AMD machine and i want to take the FW between the machines, currently the FW disk is in HFS+.

Anyone running PT is OS9 try recording in PT to NTFS or FAT32 - will it work? I have instructions for creating a single FAT32 partition on the drive, but honestly it's like a 10 step process and it sounds a little sketchy and I'd rather avoid the hassle.

Thanks for any feedback.

I did some testing one night and was able to record 24 tracks to an ex. FW formatted for the PC from a G4 & PTLE.

It worked fine.

For day-to-day we record to a second internal drive and use FW for backup and portability.

I have only gotten fat 32 to successfully work between a mac and a PC on a firewire drive. Its a pain and you could consider just partitioning it in half for either machine. Good luck

I know Mac will read FAT32 without a problem (done it several times) - when you say work do you mean you were writing multiple tracks to it from PT5.x ? Please clarify.

Also partioning a drive in different formats seems really quite sketchy, something I'd love to know if anyone has had success in pulling off. (I downloaded instructions on how to do it, but man, what a @#$% job).

Thanks

Go ahead and format it for FAT32 and give it a go. If it doesn't work for you you can just reformat it.

Like I said, we have one here we pass back and forth all the time.

Good luck.

I have a Firewire 160GB drive that I use for backups and moving files...

I use it on both my Dell PC at home and the G4 osX Jaguar at the studio....and both computers read all files without a problem....

I don't record to it though....I can open PT files from it...but it won't let me track to it.....might have something to do with the fact that I formatted it on a pc first.......

I know I've tracked to a firewire drive before at the studio...but haven't tried tracking with the same drive on a pc......

Don't know if this helped at all.........

I'm a PC guy.

Bought a 120Gb FW disk and formatted it to FAT32 because I heard that was the only format a Mac reads (no ntfs).

Remember it being hard to find a tool that actually formats any disk with only one partition over 40Gb, but it works.

Can't comment on recording direct on the disk with PT, I know streaming 24+ tracks with Cubase on a pc and Logic on a Mac is no problem.
