"Armed with this data and the power to require additional customer info through future releases of Logic, dealers claim that Apple will soon be capable of dominating the software side of the global music production industry."

The horror. I remember when people cried when apple stores started opening up. A few years later, the same people were standing in line to get the newest iteration of the iPod at the store that replaced their former hole-in-the-wall mac shop.

So, too bad for the emagic dealers. The former opcode dealers moved on, so the world won't stop turning. The world has changed alot since 1984.Now, are applications like this sold differently in the rest of the world? Stateside, logic is something you'd pick up at sam ash, mars (RIP), GC or any of the big "mailorder" places, rather than a little independent dealer. The scope of the software DAW/sequencer market just doesn't seem like enough to make a living selling the product.

I already believe "big brother" knows more about you than apple ever will, so you paranoid people aren't losing out on anything by having your records transfered. I understand why it is a concern in certain places (like germany), but the second you pull out your credit card to pay for it, you are linked to that purchase. And there are worse things than having apple tailor their application to their users. I'm probably overreacting, but that article sounds like it has negative spin on it. Or at the least, it is biased towards the soon-to-be-former distributors.

"ProBand" would be a pretty stupid name, because it intimates that the computer is somehow a part of the band. As much as software and computer makers would like to insinuate this paradigm shift into peoples consciousness, the Garage band concept is nothing more than cut and paste collage making, and a loop player/editor, or any kind of DAW is not a band.

There is a blurring in this area between creativity and cleverness. Compiling a tune in Garage band from it's loop library can be clever, but it is not creative. Applying a Photoshop filter is not creative either. Creativity is a process of generating something new from within the mind, and then figuring out how to make it real to share with others. I think that the computer industry is teaching people to eat the menu instead of eating the food when it comes to music, and real musicians, engineers and producers are suffering for it, as are the public. So I hope Apple comes up with something less manipulative to call their "flagship"recording and editing code. For a bunch of code is all it is beneath the clever advertising (another field full of cleverness but little creativity) gimmicks.

am i being creative when i write a story? i mean, i don't usually make up the words, just "assemble" them.

As long as you aren't even remotely touching the three act paradigm, you should be safe. If you want to see the ultimate in non-creativity, get into haiku. There is even less room there for self-expression than tweaking loops.

it's easy to judge
what is creative or not
when you're closed minded

Well, make your next album out of Garage band loops and see if the world supports your arguement with their wallets.

personally, that's not the way i work. a very good songwriter w/ whom i collaborate gave GB a try when it came out. he produced some nice stuff, imo.

it's the artist, not the tools.
