Which mic is this?

I love City and Colour's new album, especially the acoustic guitar sound, and I'm wondering if any of you gear nuts (slutz?) can tell me what the mic is in this MySpace Transmissions video?

MySpace.com - MySpace Transmissions - Exclusive Live Online Acoustic Music & Band Video Clips

It's sort of a black disc-like thing.

Cool, thanks.

Can anyone tell what type of strings he is using? I swear they are different than my own... my acoustic just sounds so much thicker and meatier than his (in a bad way).

The tone is in the guitar much more so than in the strings. I'm assuming your guitar is fairly big? I have a a Gibson SJ 150 that tends to sound boomy if I mic it the way I would mic something like a smaller bodied Martin.

Yes my guitar is on the bigger side. Any tips on getting that sort of sound? I can only play it without a pick and I get more of that Bright Eyes-ish close mic'd acoustic guitar sound.

I don't think the Coles has a lot to do with the sound of that guitar in that recording. In my experience the Coles mic at that distance would be much too muddy and boomy. The Coles likes to be the distance of the string length away at least. I would put $100 on the line and say that you are mostly hearing pickup in that mix or an overhead broadcast shotgun. I think I would even go further and say that the vocal in the mix is coming from an overhead broadcast boom rather then the 58 that is in the video.

Haha wow... controversial. I was questioning that SM58 as well - the sound quality is too good. Plus, they actually release these things so to put all your marbles into 2 mics like that doesn't make much sense.
