any AE know how these classics were engineered ??

i love the following in my collection...
frampton comes alive (truly great album)
cheap trick hits
the kinks first hits
stones first hits
dire straits first album
guess who hits
first who hits
plus
a song done by the poges i think it was called "your the one"
would love to know any details like consoles, mics used,
other gear used.
if jules reads this - hey jules how about a monthly article
on how a major song was engineered.
i KNOW i would find that very interesting and sure others
would too including many newbies who always ask me these things.
just an idea.

sorry, just had to do it!

I did hear their last studio album "On Every Street" was mixed on an EMI TG12345 or something similar. Very smooth album (it didn't get great reviews but I love it).

thnx remo.
i heard dires first album (sultans etc ) was done in an inexpensive
studio in the uk. he makes a comment "south of the river...etc"
which leads me to suspect that it might have been a studio south of the thames in london.
all these high end AE's on this bbs and so few details.
maybe they are too young.

Ermmm..... NO......

I think you'll find it well be the river tyne as MK is from my neck of the woods, hence the mention of "spanish city" and Cullercoats in a certain song.

Peace

totallly agree manning1, actually its thats 1st DS album that got me playing guitar in the first palce, got me into music! I can still (sort of) play most of the guitar on the first two albums and lots of the rest.. Mark is definitly at the top of my list of guitar players, I can listen to those first two albums over and over and over and...

is this Cullercoats? Looks nice!

notice the use that mk makes of minor chords.
i like on the b side remo.
lets go down to the waterline , and the following songs including the blade knife song. on this latter song i used to spend hours playing new guitar jam solos over the top of it.
great for just jamming to !!
but on sultans of swing right at the end i can never speed play at his speed those last exit riffs. where he is using "pull offs " i surmise. i'm just not fast enough !
imho they never recaptured the "feel" of that first album.
any idea what mk played on it ?
maybe a strat thru what ?
i did hear - once again correct me if i'm wrong that he used a 2 inch 16 track.
thnx for the cullercoats link.

Hi Manning...

Cullercoats is indeed a place, along with Spanish City (a local fairground attraction where MK used to "hang", sadly it's now no more than deserted wasteground).

Agreed he is up there with the the greats, and he has written some amazing tunes, some little known such as "Private Dancer" by Tina Turner.

I could go on and on...

Suffice to say, Mark is a "Geordie" through and through, look up the word and see what you find.

Peace

dave - very interesting. shame about that wasteland.
he should have written a song called "life in the wasteland".
prolly already used.
i often wonder how mk got that guitar sound on money for nothing.
sounded like he might have used some sort of midi synth maybe.
its a shame so little info is available on how major songs were engineered that i listed. prolly the ae's retired !

just some stuff...

The first album was produced by a dude called Muff Winwood.
Brothers In Arms was produced by Neil Dorfsman.

The "money for nothing" guitar tone was a Les Paul through a wah left at a single position more as an EQ.

I also read the engineer on Brothers In Arms was really unhappy about the "out of phase" guitar sound on the title track "Brothers In Arms" but Mark pushed it through.

also find some good links on MK here: there is a link about his guitar and setup in there that it really informative!

Muff was Steve's bro. Was a producer for quite a while, but the main thing I remember is that he was in A&R at CBS for a long time. He signed some pretty big '80's bands. Sade and the Psychedelic Furs and I'm sure a lot more.
