Compressor down stream affecting output of upstream pre?

Strange question:

chain: Bass--> Pendullum quartet (pre only) ---> Tube tech cl1b =

Set nice level on quartet - start dialing in some mild compression on cl1b and I notice the
output meter on the quartet drops - connected by xlr cables -- is cl1b doing this - obviously it is but how is it travelling back up the xlr to affect the output of the quartet --is this common?

could the tubetech be backloading the pre output?
