Thread Starter | distorted guitar and a u-195.
does anyone use a u-195 for recording heavy guitar(4x12)? if so did you use fat mode? im curious as to how it sounds compared to a 57 or a 421 or a e609. |

I've used my U195 some. IMO, the FAT was too much. My setup is a 5150-II into either a 4x12 (Ampeg V4 cab) or 2x12 (Mesa RECTO) and both cabs are loaded with vintage 30s. I run the U195 Flat and -10db combined with a 57 and/or 421. lately I'm using a 57, 421 and a 4033 or 4050. while I don't particularly like the 57 alone, i do like it mixed with a 421 and condenser. the 57 has the mid range the 421 and condenser lack. I haven't tried a E609.

I have used U-195's on loud guitars, it worked OK, there are other places within the context of a song presentation where I usually prefer it to guitars so I haven't used one on guitars lately. Most recently I'm back on a ribbon kick for loud guitars... the Coles 4040 has been the "go to" mic for a while now. Best of luck with the search.

I have used the U195 a bunch on loud 4x12 and combo amps. I like mixing it with a Royer R121. I like it a bunch on outside kick as well. |
