Thread Starter | Oktava MK-012 for overheads? or ATM450?
I want to upgrade my overheads. I have 2 Samson C02s right now. I get a pretty decent sound with those and Beta 52, Sm7b, and SM57s. Which give you a more full sound? I need some nice condensers for Acoustic too. So that would be great if they sound great for both. Any suggestions? Tryin to stay under 500 dollars used

| The AT will capture more room than the oktavas ( i own both ) If you have a big room with high celings both will do the job , for a smaller room i prefer the oktavas , those have a silky sound , a bit darker but more natural sound good for cymbals ... the toms sound great with this ones , on the other side the At will give you a more forward snare sound, more crack....atack, and aceptable and brighter cymbal sound....and the tom sound depends on the room . both are great mics .

this summer I'm in a pretty big room with pretty high ceilings with rafters. During the year I'm going to be leaving in my finished attic with about 7' ceilings.

I like having a room sound but having a decent snare crack/attack at the same time. I also don't like to have really extended high end with that harsh digital sound. I just like clarity for cymbals with a nice/smooth top end but with some nice lowend at the same time.

I prefer the atm450's. I have owned both. If your gonna get the oktavas get them modded by Michael Joly... You can get them already modded from him at his web. Quote:

I prefer the modded Octava's on OH as well. The ATM450 sounds killer on snare shell paired with a 57 type on top.

Is it ok that I get 2 different Oktava MK-012 from 2 different areas? or do I need to get a matched pair? It would be cheaper for me to get 2 single ones off of ebay.

I love my Oktavas for both: OH and Acoustic !! You definetely should get a matched pair (if you decide you want the oktavas after all) with cardioid and omni capsules. Maby the figure of 8 capsule, too, though I don“t know if its awailable already??? The website is very confusing! This way you can do all kinds of stereo micing. There is also other capsules for them (even third party) but I havent heard any jet. Could be nice though ![]() I think you will always find a good use for them, even if you stock up a lot. Hope that helps F |

+1 on loving the mk012's as overheads. Sometimes I use one beyerdynamic ribbon now. Smoother. The oktava's are very real. If your cymbles have a bit of a nasty ring, they will capture it. A distant ribbon in a tube pre can be less like reallity, but nicer in a vintage recording kind of way... bla bla. ![]() About the crack in the snare. It needs to be there in the first place (in the snare) and then the overheads can catch it. If you want to fake it, a dynamic mic, closer to the snare loud on tape (or distorted somewhat alike) will get you that crack easy. |
