It's definately a large display. On the left of the faders is a section with dedicated switches and there's a section on the right with transport controls and an area to mouse or place your trackball, very smart ...

I really hope the on screen keyboard is good. WIth an area to mouse this could be ergonomically good.

Still, proof is in the integration.

Ohh, this had better integrate well as it seems to have everything I liked about the original SmartAV coupled with the stuff I like from the System5.

Euphonix have some serious competition here.

Integrated QWERTY keyboard and custom key macros with fader sets and customised knob/slider layouts for software processing.... hmm nuts.

I want to try one asap.

Yeah... I saw the vid clip someone posted a link to earlier. I am saying that I would like to actually see one, touch it, sniff it, etc. The vids are great but what the heck does it smell like?

I saw it today at NAMM. It was pretty big. it only had 8 faders on it but seemed very cool. About 1 and 1/2 the size of the Euphonix and about twice as deep. The touch screen was cool, but not my thing. Wish I could have a few pics for you guys.

do smart AV products use their own communication protocol, or do they use mackie, or?

Nah Lindell I think the TFT only displays the SmartAV graphic suite for you DAW.

The only downside I can see so far, beside the tightness of their integration, is the distraction of having to manage one graphic interface in the DAW and another representation of the same thing on the Tango.

Hopefully it's all good and really intuitive.

Build looks great with a nice looking armrest!

I think the whole idea is that the integration is so tight that you won't have to look at your DAW as much, maybe only to see what's next in your sequence window...

It's like having a dedicated controller for a closed system, but in reality it's for an open system.

I'm optimistic.

Lets hope it is well supported for Tools and Nuendo plus mapping of 3rd party plugins...

Anyone at NAMM get a look at Tango? I can easily see making use of custom key switches on the touch display, and as it appears, having EQ and dynamics from Nuendo appear directly there would be killer.

From what I've seen in the SmartAV full console demo videos, you can open Logic's plugins just by hitting a switch, then tweaking as desired - if Tango functions similarly, it would be a huge timesaver, and not really much of a duplicated display - e.g. I could keep an arrange window active full screen and operate the mixer from Tango, while editing as I go as well. Minimizing screen/window layout switching. $7500 seems a bit high for only 8 faders, compared to the Euphonix Artist series, but if capabilities of the touch screen and other switches/buttons is significantly greater, then it could be justified - still, $5k or under would seem to me to be the sweet spot for the current hole in controller options.

I think the price is reasonable for what you're going to get. Even though it only has 8 faders, what's under the hood is where the real action is if the previous Smart controllers are anything to go by. But don't hold your breath for any real comprehensive Tools connectivity. Digi are notorious for keeping other manufacturers out. If they didn't implement EuCon when Euphonix came knocking there's no way they're going to let SmartAV in.

the website mentions something about an expander to give more channels on screen, I wonder if it means more faders too?

also I am still wondering about my previous question, do these use their own protocol, or is it mackie, or?

i seems priced about right to me.

i talked to a rep about 2 years ago.
way over my head at the time...
i'm still trying to figure out how it integrates with PC DAWs like SEQUOIA and SAMPLITUDE...that arent as popular as NUENDO/CUBASE/SONAR/PTLE and so on.

I saw it at NAMM and it seemed pretty interesting but I'm not sure I'm sold on it. It's gonna be around $7500 for the basic unit with 12 channel expander packs available for $6000 I think the guy said. The touch screen was really cool but it was all a little hard for me to look at sometimes. Also, the mouse was really responsive which I liked. I saw it integrated with Nuendo and I'm a Pro Tools guy so I wasn't too in sync with what it was actually showing on the screens and whether the EQs on screen were Nuendo plugins or plugins built into the Tango system. Honestly, I think I'd rather have my old Control 24 back than the Tango and if I wanted to spend $13k, I'd probably just spend $26k to get the SSL Matrix. I saw it in person at VK Nashville the other day and it blew my socks off - summing, DAW control, on screen routing of analog outboard gear, etc etc.

My .02

Oh and to answer the question of the day, it operates just like the Matrix does in that it uses IP to trick HUI.

in my inbox today....

Tango itself is in production and will be shipping in July with full compatability with Nuendo 4 and Logic 8. Control of other workstations will follow later this year.

Tango is being introduced at US$7,490

A preliminary brochure can now be downloaded from the web site

http://www.smartav.net/tangopreliminarybrochure.pdf

Further information will follow soon.

Just curious if you noticed how it displayed EQs (and compressors?) - multiple channels with EQ and/or comp on screen for each, or just one channel at a time?
