Thread Starter | UAD-1 question
I am finally thinking about getting into the UAD-1 cards. I am seeing a lot of the "older" Mackie cards with the hardwired LA2A and 1176. Are these any different than the newer ones? Is the fact that those plug-ins are hardwired a problem? Due to my current setup I am planning on getting a PCI and a PCIe card to start with. Thanks, Rob |

Rob, I guess there is no difference in sound if you mean this. Check which slots do you have before you set your order. I only can say I highly recommend you to buy the cards..... I love my UAD plugs and I know a lot of professionals which use them too. Even if I would be a millionaire I think I wont buy the hardware because the difference is in my ears to hear but not that big as some one might think. Andreas |

The Mackie and the UAD cards are identical. Same amount of processing power.

| Varies wildly depending on plugin. Some will only use 5-6% of a card, while users of the Neve 33609 claim one instance pretty much toasts a whole card. The Neve plugs in general use a lot of horsepower, so you'll want at least the two cards (especially with the recent price drop). By the way, if I remember correctly, the LA2A and 1176LN aren't actually hardwired into the Mackie versions. They still have to be authorized.

here's a link on the uad website which indicates how many instances of a plugin you can run off a single card (2nd chart down) Universal Audio | Support | UAD | Charts Its only a rough guide though as I can run 3 nigel's (with minimum modules switched on) on a single pci-e card along with 2 neve 1073SE eq's and 4 1176SE limiters without getting the cpu overload message. It can become frustrating though if you need just one more plugin to finish a small mix without having to bounce or freeze tracks. You might need more cards than you originally planned on purchasing. |

It is 2008 I think it is time for new UAD card with more power. And I bet they have plans to built them.... watching for the right business partners might be difficult. Even if there will never be a new UAD 1 Card it is worth every penny you will never say that it was a waste of money......great Plugs to fair pricing... | |
