sE Reflection Filter?????

Well then general consciences is that teh DUET"S PREs are MIND BLOWING and enough to get the forward powerful electrically thunder spoken word vocals that I desire.

That being said I record in a small 10 by 10 room, within a 4 by 5 open closet space. I have some mattress foam on the walls.

Is the limiting factor the room treatment? Would the SE filter make a difference?

I saw a post on here where this guy spoke in a NORMAL VOICE, HIGH VOICE AND WISPER AND I heard a big difference with my same mic vs not with the filter.

Instead of buying a new pre should I buy that reflection filter instead?

Im going to test the UA 610 the

I have a reflection filter and I think it makes an incredible difference. For the price I don't think you can go wrong.

I tried one for a couple weeks and returned it. That being said, unless your small room is heavily treated ( I used 40 2'x4'x2" Rockwool panels treating my 14 x 9 room) I would say you really need the Reflexion Filter. I noticed a slight improvement on vocals, even with all my traps. Just not enough to justify keeping it cause funds are limited right now (daughter's wedding to pay for). It seems best when the mic(s) are well back in the filter. For x/y micing ac. guitar, I made a pair of right angle xlr adaptors so I could get the stereo bar farther back in the filter. It did take away a bit of boominess. When my finances are better I will probably buy another one, cause they really do work well, even in a well treated room.

Do these do anything for reflections above or below seeing how it's open on top & bottom? I have a room that I'd like to do vocals in but the ceiling is extremely low. We're talking 6'6"ish. The vocal mic would be only about a foot & a half away from the ceiling. I wonder if you could mount the filter sideways??

Cheers

Waste of money. $299CDN plus tax. I bought 2, 3' panels of Auralex Z foam for $60, a $3 panel of masonite, some adheasive and $10 in hinges. In about 45 minutes

I now have a much larger filter, that looks every bit as sexy, and every bit as effective, but was less tehn half the cost.

it's ok. it's very heavy. make sure you have a nice stand. i'd suggest buying a set of three gik or real trap acoustic panels on stands and surround the mic instead. then when you're not recording vox you can use them throughout the room. kind of a dual pupose investment.

I would go with this instead:

RealTraps - Portable Vocal Booth

Much bigger, similar price and great on guitar/bass cabs and other applications aswell because of its size!
I´ve got a home-made version of the PVB, and it works wonders.

See the size difference between PVB and SE reflexion:

...just my two cents.

I dont have much treatment. I used a foam pad nailed to the wall. not sure if that dampens the sound or reflects it?

would you buy this before upgrading a pre?

I think the RF is worth the money, especially if you are cursed with a really small tracking room. Even in a decent room -- I have recently been recording in a nice 15 X 26 X 9 space -- it can make a difference. The only downside is that the RF seems to boost some frequencies between 300 and 700 Hz (or am I just imagining this?).

I have the SE RF and I like it. As mentioned above, make sure you have a good stand that can support it. Mine fell over and just about took out everything on my desk. Anyone recommend a good stand for this thing under $70? I have a bunch of On-stage brand booms and they hold mics fine, but are useless for holding up the RF.

I had it and sold it after two weeks.
No incredible difference no replacement for room treatment or cabin.

The only thing what it ads is a little more dryness and a lot of frequency shift to your recording. You will still hear your room on your recording a lot.
Give 299$ to the poor people in Irak or Africa this makes more sense!!!!!

Use some Acoustic Foam what is working in the range of the human voice put it over a corner on the walls place you Microphone there.
This will cost you less money and you have done something by yourself.... remember Home Recording means to do a lot by his-self.

I think it works great. I have 2 of them, one permanently in the vocal booth, one in the live room where I put it to use when I record diffirent types of instruments.

It´s easy to test it.. just hold a mic in your room, talk while recording and move slowly from the outside of the filter into it. You should hear the effect..

But they do have some competition now, one which I forgot the name of, and here is another:

SM Pro Audio - The Mic Thing

the products offered by other companies seem bigger.. And like the smproaudio product, you can change the angle of the sides..

Its a great device. But tracking vocals is only about 30% of what i use it for. Its moderate size makes it a very versatile product for may situations where you want to constrict or shape what a mic picks up. All the best.

That's kind of my thing with this device. Like, I wouldn't see myself putting any other kind of mic inside except an LCD. But then I'd have to go spend more money on a mc stand to record vox that...I haven't had the opportunity to record yet, but...I've been curious but skeptical. Some real-life samples would help justify spending 300, er 400 (with mic stand) on this device.

Overall, I still think I could get good vocals without it so I haven't spent the coin.

No it is not a great device because it ads frequency shift to the recording.
I like to capture the voice without shift... I have bought expensive microphones not taht such a thing is shifting everything.

I found you have to put the mic into the middle with the back of the mic right on the outside edge. If you push it in too far you will get issues. I love my SE Reflextion filter and it really reduces reflections being heard when I sing in my studio.

In figuring cost, you have to add in the cost of a heavy mic stand to the SE-RF. Just FYI.

If you want something small, portable and convenient, then it's better than nothing. It will cut down some on the reflections, but it can impart some coloration and the drier you want the voice, the more coloration it will impart on the mic (some low-mid frequency mumbo-jumbo and some phasiness).

Another solution is to hang some heavy blankets like a duvet/comforter/quilt behind you in a V or U shape from the ceiling or from large stands. As far as cutting out room reflections it will work at least twice as well as the RF. As far as negative coloration on the mic, there's zero. As far as cost, it's a billion times cheaper. The downside is that it's far from portable. It's a put it up or take it down thing, but not really a move it over there kind of thing. That portability factor is a killer for some folks. But if it's not a deciding factor for you, it's by FAR the best option.
