recommend books about recording and mixing

i've been thinking of all sorts of questions about tracking and using effects and stuff and i was going to try and post them here, but really, i think i just need to buy a decent book (or two, or three) on recording and mixing. i'm not scared of a bit of maths if it helps me understand pratical things like mic placement, but i'm never going to enjoy deciphering differential equations so something reasonably accessible would be nice.

any suggestions much appreciated, i'd rather have a book recommended by some working engineers than just something i find on amazon.

thanks.

the tony sheppard DVD advertised on gearslutz (actually I've never watched it, but I'm just being supportive, there is a thread about peoples experiences of it somewhere)

and I think this book

Amazon.com: The Recording Engineer's Handbook: Bobby Owsinski: Books

although mine had a differnt cover, so I can't guarantee this is the right one

or spend far too long on gearslutz

Handbook of Recording Engineering - John Eargle
There is a lot of Analog Recording info that you may filter through or may find interesting anyway, but it's a great foundational book.

If your looking for information that takes you from analog to the digital domain, I would look for "The Audio Pro Home Recording Course" series by Bill Gibson. 3 books that cover everything......along with audio CD's samples so you can hear what he is talking about.

i've gone with eargle, for two reasons

I can't believe no one has mentioned "Mastering Audio" -Bob Katz.

Although geared toward mastering he covers very important principles that will up your mix game by leaps and bounds.

Basically it is comprehension of understanding how audio works, and the different tools we use to manipulate audio.
