Studio Websites

Can anyone post a url for a studio website that you like?
I have hired a web designer to do a nice/simple flash website for my studio and he asked for some examples.
I did a search for some studios and haven't seen any designs I like so far.
Thanks!

Bruce,

Your site is very cool. Iam is funky, but a bit overdone perhaps? I'm reminded of the Homer's Snowplow commercial.

Bart: "Dad was that your commercial?"
Homer: "I Don't Know..."

This one is pretty nice (it would be hard to make a site or this place look bad)

Allaire Studios- The Studios

+Keep your navigation really simple.

+Use lots of photos that load quickly

+Keep in mind that most of your customers will not get sold on technical specs as much as vibe and a good story

Thanks alot guys, should give him some ideas.
Bruce, I like your website too, simple and easy to navigate.
The one with the dog was a bit overkill, but I sent it along anyway.
The budget is $500.00, so he should be able to do something decent.

click on your language preference to get to the main site....I think it's pretty nuts. Must have cost a fortune.

I'd suspect the' I Am' website would have been 10x that amount.

I agree.

Most users want quick uploads of sites and easy navigation. Flash sites are great if done right (most of them aren't all that good), but search engines won't pick up on the content within the site for higher search results.

I designed this fun little Flash site for a studio in California.

Never Never Music | California

Some people want flash, others don't. Generally it just comes down to search results. In this case, search results weren't a priority, so we were able to have some fun.

+1

For my tastes, Flash sites are typically too slow, too cute, too hard to navigate. I also don't like black backgrounds, too hard to read for my eyes.

I liked Matthew Murrays Never Never Music site. The graphics weren't my 'style' but the site is well laid out, easy to find stuff, easy to read, and not too much 'flash'. Good job Matthew.

If the amount of content you want to show is relatively small, and you find a good usability designer, you can get something good like Matthew's site out of Flash.

If you want a site that's going to change and grow with new content over the years a content management system like DotNetNuke might be a better alternative. With something like DNN you can pay a designer exactly one time to skin the site but you (or your authorized collegues) can add new content at will over time without wrecking the visual design. I'm a huge fan of content management systems, a good one will completely separate visual design from content and allow you to delegate content creation to multiple people in different roles. New content is created online in your web browser - no special tools or skills needed, you just add text, new downloads,... the visual design is in the skin (well, mostly)

As an example, this site was made with DNN. I paid about $70 for the skin that is currently used. DNN is free. There are thousands of pre-builts skins for DNN and plug-in modules that perform a variety of different functions. I can change skins at any time in a few seconds and get an entirely new visual design, different kinds and placement of menus, different graphics and colors,.... It's a pretty cool web environment.

// Welcome // *M a r t i n * S t r e e t * S t u d i o s

Here's a Flash site for a studio I did for a friend in like 2002... kinda out there stylistically, his now-wife did the illustrations, etc. etc... I wouldn't do this sort of thing anymore, though. Fortunately the web has moved on and most people appreciate simple, clear and clean site design and structure.

Bear in mind $500 (US$ or otherwise) isn't a great deal of money as far as website development goes even for a single freelance designer, so keep your expectations reasonable. Aim towards getting a nice template design loaded into a CMS like Wordpress and load/manage the content yourself, and you'll be set.

Cheers, Ben.

Actually 100x would be more realistic... an incredible - and almost daft - amount of work went into that site. I do Flash development and believe me, it's hard, time consuming stuff. Kinda ironic that, given their market, that sort of site would probably be more of a turnoff.

I know I'd hire their web guys if I wanted a cool animation. But if I had to pick a studio in a timely manner, I might get impatient with all that slow loading cuteness.

But it is very cute. I was certainly entertained.

But does that, in itself, sell a studio?

I err'd on the side of caution with my 'estimate'.

I do similar work also :)

I hate flash as a tool to create websites in and so, I hate flash based websites. Please give me xhmtl/css anytime.
Also, if customers want a flash based website, they can look elsewhere as I see no point in using flash. Its just not what its made for IMHO
