I'm sorry if this has been covered time and time again, but i can't seem to find it...basically, i need some great snare samples for pop/rock stuff...think, switchfoot, avril, lifehouse, etc...I don't need anything but some good snares cause i messed up my mic placement while recording drums recently and have way to much bleed in my top snare mic of the hi hats, i've never used samples before, so this is a first for me...so any suggestions on where to go now?

And no, I can't re-record, or I would.

Thanks for any input you may have

I still love my "Drumkits from Hell" CD from years ago. It has some excellent examples of a varied set of dry, very well recorded kits. They are perfect for sample "augmentation".
I'm keen to hear the DKFH 2 but haven't had the need.

Allot of people love the Steven Slate stuff, but I find it a little too processed for my needs. That said I've not spent allot of time with them so my experience is limited.

You could always look at just getting a good sample from the kit you are recording, just record a couple of minutes of the drummer sound checking. That's always a good natural(ish!!) way of fixing those bleed issues.

Yeah, that's the rumor, I just don't know though, and all I want/need is snares....the ones I've heard on there seem a little to aggressive, like more for heavy rock stuff, not so poppy sounding, if that makes sense.

I use the stephen slate samples , I like the kicks and toms , but the snares are not really to my taste.
Maybe try out the BFD demo and see if you like the snares , cant find a link to a BFD 2 demo , the link below is for BFD v1.5

Do you have an older collection?

I have the Steven Slate Platinum 2.0 discs and in all I think there is 36 snares. They are some of the best sounding snares I've ever heard - very fat, very easy to fit in the mix, and very rich and big sounding. I also couldn't live without the room samples that come with the snares. I haven't used a reverb on drums in about a year. I always find my problem is narrowing down which one to choose.

I can hear the samples on a lot of pop records and have used them on a lot of pop. Take a listen to the latest Click5 record. I know what you mean about thinking the samples sound aggressive because on most of the demos on his site the snare is in its "crack" mode. For pop I usually use the "hard" mode for snares which is less aggressive and more suitable for pop. I emailed Steven about putting up some less aggressive demos because there is so many great sounds that can be had using the "hard" snares. For pop my favorite big snares are: 4,6,8,11,12,AC Snare, and for cracky pop I like 7, 9, GreenSnare, 15, 18, and ringy I would go with 21.

My other reference point is Addictive drums which I just got two weeks ago. I like the snares but they aren't "finished" sounding like the Slate snares which I've been spoiled with for the past year. The other issue is making the Addictive snares into something that you can use for a live mix. It might take a bit of work.

I used to have BFD1 but I sold the entire machine. Lets just say I wasn't happy. I am however saving up for BFD2. You can never have enough drum software

Btw look around gearslutz for users Chymer and VitaMusica.. both guys have posted some really amazing pop mp3s using the slate stuff. I'll see if I can dig out some mixes i did using snare4 on a celine dion cover artist.

Hope this helps ya out, good luck!

Cool, thanks for all the info, I'd really love to hear some pop oriented stuff if you find any mp3s, you've almost sold me on it by what you've said.

Junk thanks always for the kind words.

Tom, some of my very favorite pop producers/mixers use our drums including guys like Dave Way (Christina Aguilera, Fionna Apple, Sheryl Crowe), Steve MacMillan (Kelly Clarkson, Seal, Faith Hill). Mike Shipley did an amazing job on the CLICK5 record using some of our samps to augment the drums.. great record!

As Junk said you can use the less aggressive hits to create some very easy going sounds. There have been quite a few mp3s posted, I'll see if I can compile them. Steven is making some as well and we'll soon have them featured on our main audio demos section of the site.

Having said all of this, I recommend listening to other drum software demos to figure out whats best for you!

Joel
