Teac x-300r

Anyone here acquainted with the Teac X-300R two track?

I have one around for the time being- rumour is that this particular one has some minor quirks. I can't even seem to get the record button to stay engaged. Are there any known issues with this that anyone knows of or is this one just messed up?
I've tried just holding in the record button and the tape starts moving - but upon playback nothing comes out. I have tried both the line ins and the mic ins and the meters show that I am hitting it hard enough.... odd.

TIA
