which DRUM SET MICs with 8 NEVE style preamps?(lo budget line but still sounds great)

Hi gearslutz!

Which drum set mics will be great with combination of neve style preamps?

-looking for fat sound
-style rock, metal, ... modern style of production

My budget is around 500€ (790$)

for start I need:
1x kick mic
2x snare (top and bottom)
1x hi or mid tom
1x low tom
1x hihatt
2x overhead

you can go with alternatives for more money too, but please not far from 500€ (790$). if there some good mics for that budget lets say that 500€ (790$) is a limit for new mics.

thanx guys

Kick Mic- Shure Beta 52
Snare Mic (TOP) Shure SM57
Snare Mic (BOTTOM) Audix I5
Hi-Tom - Senn MD421
Low-Tom - Senn MD421
Hi-hats - Shure 81
Overheads - Pair of Casscade Fathead II's

I have used this set-up with success except for the 81 on the hats as I usually don't mic hats.

$790 is not much for drum mics

Sm81s - Overheads , 57s on everything else and a kick mic . Maybe a D112 .

With such a low budget you are very limited

Hold on, you spend $5000 on preamps and now you have only $800 for the mics? I don't want to sound negative but that seems a bit weird to me.

But hey those pres can make your dynamics sound very good, so I guess either an Audix drumcase with d6 and i5 or indeed some 57's with a beta 52 for kick. Shure has some complete drumcases too I believe.

Goodluck finding good mics for your overheads, do you have some mics allready? Maybe you can rent or borrow some for the coming sessions.

I don't have alot of money for buying amps every few years, so I pick up the best I can.

you have right i will rent or some for the coming sessions , but I still looking for lo budget as I can for drum mics. as you say with few sm 57 you can do alot.

overheads .... I know that here is the?

Build your own Neve style preamps Seventh Circle Audio - Main Nav it will cost about $3100 US to build. They take about 3-4 hours to build per channel. They sound fantastic.

That will leave you more $ to buy the mics below.

1x kick mic Sennhieser 902
2x snare Audio Technica ATM650's or Audix i5's
1x hi or mid tom Cad M179
1x low tom Cad m179
1x hihatt AT 3031
2x overhead ATM 450's if you have more $ get Beyer MC930's

2 Oktave mk012 as overheads, can be very accurate! Russian things are cool.

If you only have 500 euro's for all the mic's the only thing you can buy that is complete are drummic sets like:

AUDIX FUSION 7 DRUM SET 474
Shure PGDMK6-XLR 429

Or else try to buy first 2 overheads, a snaremic and a bassdrummic.

As you're in Europe, check out red5audio.com for their mics. - [EDIT - I see they are on sale for £149 at the mo]

But if I were you I'd get the "RVK7 deluxe" set for £377 - cos you get 2 decent multi-pattern LDCs thrown in, plus mic clips

Very good inexpensive drum set mics, very well made, solid construction and sound good... And a damn good price.

The dynamics are nice and short/stubby,

I have the kick drum mic which is really fat and punchy. I also have the RV10 condenser - similar vibe to AKG C414 - excellent mic.

Also check out the Kel Audio HM2-D which I also have... similar vibe to SM7 but they are condensers - specifically designed to sound fat. thumbsup

+1. If your budget is really that tight, the pack offerings from Audix or Shure would be where I would be looking.

Use less mics. Kick/Snare and mono (or stereo) overhead will give you all you need.

D112 (rather use a U87 or something but that's out of the price range)
SM57
Avenson Audio mics for overheads?

The alternative is to buy fewer mic, that are better quality. To use less channels, have fewer phasing issues, and make mix time easier on yourself.

I'd go 4 mics.

A decent pair of overheads, a Beta 52/Audix D6 for kick, and a Beyer m201 snare.
