please recommend small "mastering style" studio desk (furniture)

i basically want a desk that fits as many racks as possible in front of my as i sit looking at my monitor (i assume 7-11 spaces).

the style where the rackmount gear is slightly and ergonomically angled so that you cn merely extend your hand in from of you and adjust rack-gear... usually ive seen things at about a 20-30 degree angle.

i hope this is clear. please recommend any companies that manufacture this... i dont need a monstrous argosy or anything...

If you want cheap and cheerful but still looks OK, Quik Lok Z600 isn't the worst. Otherwise one of the small AKA Designs desks might do the job.

NICE... i could do with just an 8-10 space rack (at the same angle you have) in the center and not such a wide desk. i like the idea though...

After having one of the best designers help me out with my room (Bob Alach www.alactronics.com ), I can say that less is more in a mastering room. You have to take in acount all the reflections off the desk. To be honest, if you are mastering, get a reputable acoustic consultant in the room and have him tell you what kind of desk you should have. The placement of the desk, your acoustic treatment, and your studio monitors, and your computer monitors all are big factors in the sound. After struggling with my new mix room's problems, I just had Bob come in and with the new treatments and all the other stuff he did, my room is flat and sounds amazing.

bang-- much agreed.. but actually im not doing mastering in the studio, ive just seen a majority of these desks (with angled center rack-sections) in mastering context. just wanted to communicate what furniture i wanted more clearly...

pentajigga - It's a cheesy $30 switcher-only unit that runs off of a seperate conditioner. Just so I can turn off some of the tubes if I'm not using them. That particular unit isn't even in that rack anymore (those shots are a bit dated - Gotta get some new ones soon), but I still use one.

Min - It's a breath of fresh air. You decided not to sell yours?

Your best bet to get a great console is to either buy one from Sterling Modular or have a local custom cabinet guy build yours (what I did)...

I agree completely.

I have an Argosy desk (one of the 70 series universal desks), plus one of their roll-around-bastard thingy, and they are phenomenal.

I get compliments on them from every client, they are built solid as a rock, very ergonomic and the folks at Argosy are the best. I even got a signed XMAS card from them last year; I bought a LOT of gear last year and that was the ONLY card I got from a dealer/manufacturer.

The only drawback is moving the thing; I just moved into a new place and man that desk is the thing Im dreading moving....

argosy is very nice, but a bit too big for my needs.
the sterling modular is interesting, but i have to check the dimension since i need a bit of room for keyboard and midi controller on the flat front portion. great suggestions though guys. i may end up going the custom route, but please continue with the suggestions or pics.

much appreciated.

The Sterling Modular stuff is cheaper than having a good cabinet maker custom build on for you. At least that's the way it is here...

Check out the dimensions on the 70's V2 series (the universal desk with 2 bays), it's actually surprisingly small, which is why I wound up with it.

Realize I'm not likely to get a response from John simply by resurrecting this ancient thread, but, John... where did you get those racks? Been looking for something like that for a long, long time.

EDIT: Googling MidAtProd turns up jack.
