Getting a similar guitar tone to Stephen Carpenter from Deftones?

This guy's got a pretty unique guitar tone. Any ideas on methods to get something similar? Mic type/placement? Maybe mixing in a condenser 5 to 10 feet back as well as a dynamic or two up on the speakers?

First need an EMG 81 for the tone tightness and bite - If You are refering to the around the fur tone - what was captured on tape was different than in the final mix - the way it was eq'ed etc -

Don't forget Stephen Carpenter's signature ESP guitar is also awesome.

It is neck through and the strings go into the body. It has balls and tons of sustain. The Harmonics ring out for days.

I was always a huge fan of his tone. I have his ESP Signature Series guitar (one of the earlier ones with Seymour Duncans in it).

Here is a clip that I did at bedroom volume. One of the key parts of the sound is the guitar. A Les Paul would sound different for example.

Louderock, that is cool about the JMP-1 direct. I always thought it was miced, but you should know best Thanks for being on the forum.

Cheers,
Lumen

He uses multiple different amps on the album. A lot of Line 6 and Boogie stuff actually. His right hand is so tight I'd actually say that's the majority of his tone. Plus a lot of greens.

And if he's anything like most of the other guitar endorsees, he doesn't even play it on the albums.

Yes he does. And on the new record he's playing an 8 string baritone among other things.
