Favorite acoustic guitar you ever recorded...

I have only recorded a handful but my fav was a friend who recently acquired one from the 1930's. Stuck NT5's spaced pair and it sounded amazing!

Martin om 24
Collings om 2hg
Mcpherson 5.0xp
Gibson L0 parlor guitar
Gibson SJ-200
Gibson J-45
Martin 00-18
Santa Cruz 000
Lonestar rosewood guitar (Friend of mine got it at a garage sale for $60)

Whew! Beutiful guitars

I Like Neumann KM86s on martins and Neumann U47FETs on the gibsons. Tracked the lonestar with a fathead and it sounded soooooo smooth.

don't really have a single fave, but have better luck with slightly (but not overly) smaller body guitars.

course, the rooms about as important as the guitar is to me.

I recorded a guy who has a lower model Alvarez, but wound up putting a whole bunch of money into luthiery work for one reason or another and the guitar sounds absolutely amazing. I used a pair of KSM137s and it turned out great!

My Martin 0021GE. A small box with the wider 12 fret neck. Sounds much more balanced than my D28.

I'm starting to suspect that the OM may be the perfect size....

I like to use a pair of Schoeps M222 with MK41 hypercardioid caps in ORTF.

I did a track with a 1945 Martin. It sounded like silk pouring out of a spider's ass.

Hey, Bader, that sure is a cool looking guitar. Those NT-5s look really familiar. I'm starting to think I should have kept them instead of the Oktavas-oh,well. My best recording so far is my latest acquisition (1964 Gibson J50) through an x/y pair of MXL 603s through the 2 channel Hardy. The tone and playability of this guitar is just unreal. I will never part with this guitar.

I’m currently working on a project for the Danish Martin Distributor where I’m recording all their guitars. The idea is to let people both see and hear the guitars on their web page, so all the guitars are recorded with the exact same setup:

Two AKG 451 B in AB stereo -> API 3124+ -> Lynx Aurora 8

So far my favourite is the D-45 CELTIC KNOT, it’s sweet (and expensive! ).

Last month I recorded a Furch guitar with 2 U67's in a X-Y setup. Best acoustic guitarsound ever heard, but most of that came from the Furch guitar and the guy who played it. The Neumanns went through Millennia preamps, and then through a Manley Elop...

I recently did a recording on a higher-end Ovation, and while I was skeptical having worked with some amazing taylors, martins, and guilds (guild being my hands-down prior favorite) - But I found that between my players abilities and micing technique it was just really pristine.

In case you're wondering- it was a MS pair 414 (m) and sE Z5600 (s) going thru 2 api 512cs. Vocals were recorded with a shure sm7b thru a chandler germ pre and the whole track really shined.

Its a jack johnson cover for an acoustic demo and I swear the intro sounds exactly like jack's!

I've recorded a bunch - most every brand you can imagine. I have 3 favourites:

1. My hand-crafted Paxton SJ
2. a 50's Gibson - don't know the model
3. a relatively new Gibson Sheryl Crow Signature

All 3 of these guitars required nothing other than a mic into a pre, and a little compression to help it sit in the track - brilliant.

My least favourite guitars to record? Taylor. For whatever reason I always find them too bright and strident sounding, and lacking in body. I know they're EXTREMELY popular, so it's probably just me, but...

A very old NightingGale Arch top..

not strictly acoustic but sounds amazing micd up and processed.

If feels so light as if it were made of Balsa wood.

Not much info online though. if anyone knows about them I would
love to hear from you.

This was bought from a second hand store for $50.

I believe they are worth many thousands..

I did a record for a guy a few years back that played a mid level Seagull 6 string and a Seagull 12 string. I miced 'em up with a 414 in figure 8 at the neck/body joint and it sounded great. Good player, too. Those guitars record really well

Also, recently a Martin D28 (don't know what year) with km84's in X/Y and a U47 about 6 feet back..... ... lovely sound

I have a '86 Mossman dreadnaught that I hand picked during final assembly from the luthier that made them at that time named Scott Baxendale.
Funnily enough... my guitar was being built for some '80s heavy metal guitar God who's name escapes me... Jake E. Lee? No...
The luthier owed me a BIG favor, so I got the guitar I wanted.
Sorry metal guy who's name escapes me!
Stuart Mossman started building his own guitars in the '60s.
he had built at Martin, Gibson and Guild before he started his own company in Kansas and he based this design on some type of Martin dreadnuaght.

Mossman Guitars Inc. Home Page, makers of world class handmade guitars & basses
(watch the Youtube video for a great history of Mossman Guitars)

You never saw guys like Doc Watson play anything except a Mossman.
Keith and David Carradine are big Mossman promoters.
I am VERY lucky to own it.

I have a good friend who is an A list studio player and he is endorsed by Taylor and has some exquisite guitars.
A guy HE plays with in another group (Beatlegrass) has an acoustic guitar that cost over $10K!!!!!!

My Mossman guitar is probebly better tonally balanced for recording than any of those guitars. Even the $10K guitar, but I have only recorded it live.
The intonation on my guitar is also better than any Martin I have ever played.
Intonation is one thing that Mossmans were famous for.

I will say that my Mossman is NOT a very bright guitar.
It requires new strings if you want the shimmery, Nashville sound.
The tone is VERY mellow and for lead work it is very round sounding.
With slightly older strings it starts to almost resemble a classical guitar!
Not exactly, but it isn't twangy and brite unless the strings are BRAND NEW.

The Taylors my studio player friend come in second, but I have also recorded this guy (Milo Deering) playing his wife's stage guitar which is cheap-o Alvarez and he makes it sound like the music of angels.
Talent.

Still my Mossman wins.

My favorite guitar is a collings d2a, however, I have seen guys pick up whatever crap guitar was behind them at a music store and make it sound like heaven. the sound of an acoustic guitar weighs heavily in the hands of the player.
