Out of phase guitars for vynil?

I just got a call from a band I did and they are getting their stuff put out on vynil. The vynil company si telling them that they can't do it because the guitars are out of phase. We did two different guitar players using two different guitars and two different amps. The only thing that was the same was the same cab and same mics. Would that cause the out of phase? They were panned hard left and right. I am confused!

hi,

y'see the thing about phase is, although it is easily caused by the same signal being flipped 180 degrees (and this is strictly polarity rather than phase), you can get the same vinyl damaging stuff from perfectly seemingly innocent material. If you have a stereo waveform and the left and right channel have massively different polar variation it pretty much won't be cut-able. There are minor fixes for some phase issues but I'd say you might have to dig into the M/S and sort it out a little that way (reducing the "side" level). Having said that - the mastering house should be able to do this or have a good go with an elliptical EQ for mono-making . If they could push the EE up a little higher in frequency that may help....

there is only so much you can do - one thing vinyl does have issues with is loud AND wide. Hard left and right panning of similar things is often an issue, as it appears you are seeing. I'm sure it is someway fixable but, as they are saying the guitars are in great opposition you ARE going to lose some of the tone i you pan them less hard. As I say, try the M/S thing...
