I have no idea how to make the D112 sound good. I like the D12 much better.

The D12 is indeed far superior

but the poll is anaemic, to say the least

Yes, D12, plus a lot of people use 421.

Neither.

Faves here are the D12E, the M380 and the M88.

Any poll about bass drum mics that doesn't have at least one of those mics on it is a complete waste of time IMO.

...As is any studio that doesn't have at least one of those in it.

Never tried RE20, what are some benefits since the price defiantly isn't compared to the 52?????????

RE 20 is kind of low on proximity effect, so you can put it in quite close and still get a reasonably balanced sound. Some of the others mentioned here get thicker than the RE 20 when you move in close.
I'll end up using a RE 20 about half the time on all kinds of music.
421, D12, D112 equally the other half of the time. Maybe the D112 less these days.
I've ended up using the Beta 52 for the same kind of reasons that i would use an RE 20. They are both a bit tighter than the D112, D12. So, in that respect this poll is understandable.
I'd go RE 20 as it's easier to EQ than the Shure. Flatter frequency response when placed close to source, i guess.

the RE 20 is also a nice mic to have around for vocals, horns, a million other things.

It seems like the Beta 52 is a microphone that you have to have a certain taste for.

And no one says anything they dislike about the RE-20 which makes it seem that the RE-20 is a mic that doesn't have a distinct flavor but you have to give it one with an equalizer.

Sounds like the Beta 52 has more outspoken personality but the RE-20 is an easy going, go with the flow, laid back kind of dude.

Beta 52 has a small beer gut while it's pretty obvious that RE 20 does a work out every morning.

I think the beyer M88 is the king of bass drum mics. Even better than a u47fet. I did side by side comparisons with every bass drum mic you could imagine and I have clips.

-1 here I'm afraid. Never could really warm to the 602. Perhaps because there are so many other great options.

Any mic that doesn't make the bass drum sound like someone snapping their finger.

In other words, D12.

Im actually a huge fan of both the D112 and the RE 20.

Recently I popped the RE 20 just outside the hole of the resonant head of the kick and put the D112 about six inches from where the beater strikes on the beater head... phase inverted and actually got a fat full punchy great sounding kick... I was pleasantly surprised!

Maybe something to try it worked for me
