Converter/Preamp Upgrade

So I'm looking to upgrade the front end of my home studio. I'm currently running 8 channels (4 Sytek, 2 DAV, and 2 AEA) into a MOTU 828 mkII and would like to upgrade both the pre's and converters. Problem is, I'm a student so I don't have much cash. As I rarely use more than 6 channels at a time, I'm thinking the best plan of action is selling both the DAV and the AEA, and picking up an A2D, then I can have 6 channels for drums, and the two API pres/converters for overdubbing.

Basically I was hoping for some input on this plan, and if anyone has any better ideas, I would love to hear them. Also, is the API conversion going to a HUGE upgrade from the MOTU, and is comparable to Lynx, Apogee, etc conversion?

So far as other suggestions go, I'm looking to spend between $1500-2000 and would like at least 2 channels A/D and 2 pres. Are there any other options int he same class ast the A2D?
