Recall's-just one small tweek, it will only take you 5 min.

Recall's-
Don't you just love when someone calls you after the 2nd recall session and says...
"just one small tweek, it will only take you 5 min."

What takes 5 min. in the studio? .......

They forget you gotta find the session , 5 mins , fix it which takes 5 mins, then another 5 mins to rebounce , then another 5 mins to burn a new CD .

So if your really lucky 20 mins ,

Clients do understand the pain we go through

Bill an hour minimum, and let them know that's your policy at the commencement of the project.

recall's are a 2 hour bill minimum. The first recall is included in the price, after that its a 2 hour bill per recall. The problem is that many people say "it's just a small tweek" and think since its a tiny level change or mute that it's no trouble and can't see why i would have to charge for a small thing like a +1db change, even though i have to re-print all the versions (TV track, Inst., stems maybe, etc.) and upload it, then back up the changes so they can re-re-recall it later.

it's like the time a band manager said i could mix a live show in 4 hours.

i said " its a 2hour 45 minute show?"
"If i listen to a song 1x and print on the 2nd listen without even stopping, its still over 5 hours!"

his reply: "you can do it in 4 hours, right?"

math was not his strong side......

what about the time it takes to make the changes and listen for a minute to the change...... and don't forget uploading and backing up.

Picking up the phone, talking to the guy, and then booking him for your minimum studio time billing block -- which better be a lot more than five minutes.

In my (mostly non-audio) day job, I often have good customers call me with quick fixes and tiny things. I try to be flexible. I try to not nickel and dime my bread and butter clients. But if you don't charge for your time, you're a sucker. And I've been a sucker enough times to know that that's not how you keep your head above water.

What if you use outboard gear ?
You can't really 'recall' most things exactly as they're not clickable.

i don't mix ITB, so it takes me a 15min's +/- to get it matched, it's not a huge deal, but time is time...... and time=$

We only sell 2 things......

2. Talent (???? x ???=????)

Do we recall more often now because we can?

of course.

clients also never seem to realize that i've moved on to another project. i mean...would they have wanted me to stop mixing their project for an hour while i recalled someone elses song, made changes, reprinted versions, and uploaded the master? me thinks "no."

i love it when bands ask me "how fast can we mix this song"

i always ask...."how long is the song.."

then reply..."at least THAT long...but probably alot longer."

i've always felt like if you needed to RECALL a mix...it probably wasn't the right mix anyway !!

that being said....the dumbest thing i ever do is ask for a list of changes from band members. 2 hours later after i read the 5 pages of "little things" i realize i should charge more....and by the hour !!

there are NEVER any "small tweaks".....NEVER.

best,

if i was in a position to charge by the clock i'd need a very big, very slow clock!

ask me again in, oh, a year or two.

it's amazing what musos expect for their money these days... and even more that i'm happier trying to give it to them than earning a decent living doing something that i don't love.

we live in hope... and patience, lots of patience... brokeness... happiness...

go figure.

I also mix on an analog console, whenever possible I try to leave the mix up overnight
and will perform some small tweaks the next day. But once I've ripped it down it's a few hours to get it back, I patch in lot's of outboard

Hmmmm...lets see. There are tons of recall sheets (which I took countless hours making) for the console and every piece of gear in the joint. Patch lists. Digital Photo Snaps of the console before I strike it down. Track Sheet with notes all over it. Sometimes multiple track sheets if the mix had a ton of rides, pans, or whackiness to it. If the session was from 2" and I mixed from it...alignment notes. Oh analog if you didn't sound and work so well...

Oddly enough, the documentation thing is how I can consistently figure out if someone will make a decent assistant or not. "Dude! Paperwork?! I wanna run Pro Tools! I'm good at it." Speaking of which, if I get one more PT session with no notes and "Audio 1, Audio 2, Audio 3..."...
