Thread Starter | reverse reverb
hi all so i was listening to a few songs the other day and i was diggin the reverse reverb effect. you know where they have the reverse reverb kick in on a vocal track before the verse begins or something like that. so how do you get that sound? is it an effect in an effects processor? if so what units have that? and how does it have the reverb work before a signal is even being fed into it? or is it a matter of playing the track backwards, and applying reverb to it. print that reverb to a new track. and then turn both tracks around the correct way. then just mix in that wet reverse reverb before it hits the vocal line and then just cut it out of the mix...is that correct?

i think the way to do it is take like only the first syllable or word of the phrase, isolate it...process it with a really long tailed reverb 100% wet then reverse that, slide it in front of the vocal line...maybe put a fadein envelope on it...viola! you may have to adjust some stuff to get it to work.

The first hardware reverb that i came across with reverse reverb was the Yamaha SPX 90. Previously, we would mark the 2 inch tape where we wanted the effect, flip the reels over and record a normal reverb return from the reversed track that needed reverse reverb... then, set the reels back again and then you had the reverse reverb effect (which half the time didn't sound like we imagined..so the whole thing was a waste of time anyway!!) The SPX 90 kind of did it, but it was different to the tape effect. It was certainly a useable sound, becoming quite identifiable. When samplers took over, it would be simpler for me to sample the source and just reverse the sample and record back to tape.. less hit and miss than the old school way. Now, of course, it's just a case of record reverb and reverse wave within the DAW...definitely a point in favour for digital systems. |
