I remeber reading an interview with Tom Scholtz about re-creating the feel of a drum performance by chopping the multitrack up every few inches/feet, moving the slices a few millimetres, and sticking it back together --- which sounds pretty crazy to me.

Actually... Hang on a sec... how on earth would you deal with cymbal decay tails? - sounds like maybe there weren't any crashes on that particular track.

So anyway, what kind of things did you hardcore tapers get up to?
