Thread Starter | Update - Adam A7 Blown Speaker?
Having never actually heard a blown speaker, I'm not a hundred percent sure this is the case... but I just started getting a mean rattle in one of my speakers. I still get sound from it, and at low volumes it sounds fine, but turn it up and it really starts to rattle around the speaker. |

That sounds blown to me. Turn the speaker off, and push the woofer in and out with your hand and listen for a scraping sound. If it scrapes it's probably blown.

Try soloing the kick, then pan it to the 'suspect' side... increase level if necessary until you hear the problem, then pan the kick over to the other side... if the other side sounds fine, then yeah, you probably have a blown speaker. If it's the tweet that's suspect, then pick something with some high frequency content & do the same thing. Only thing is, with active monitors, you don't really know if it's a problem with the speaker or the amp/crossover... you might need to do some speaker swapping to confirm for sure.

| That's a technique that all 16 pro repair techs at the pro audio repair shop I worked for used to check speakers. You're not supposed to shove it or press really hard. Just gently press the cone in a few times to see if it scrapes.

Nevertheless, I always say I'd buy them over again. They sound great, just get them from a retailer on the offered 2-year warranty.

Guys, is this normal on the A7s? I'm getting some nasty distortion when I have my DAC's pot at around 8+ but 7 below there's no distortion and the signal isn't even peaking on either settings but once I get to 8+ on the pot I get very nasty distortion. This doesn't happen on my headphones or on my Genelecs only on the A7s. I have the A7s volume knob at around -38 from what I was told I should always get the hottest signal from my converter but I can't max it out since that distortion kicks in, mostly apparent on solo pianos I get the distortion once get past 8+ but on loud drums it's fine. |

Yup, there is a definite sraping sound... makes me almost want to cry ![]() I wasn't sure that it was actually blown, because I really wasn't pushing the speakers when it happened. Anyway, I've already been in contact with Adam's Canadian rep, so they can take it from here. Thanks for the input guys (and for ruining my day) ![]() Dan

Well, if it's under warranty you might just want to have them repair / replace it, but if it's not, you should check into how much it would cost to buy a replacement woofer from Adams (if they'll let you) and just replace it yourself. Could save you some $$$.

I'd just like to say a thank you to Andy from Diffusion Audio for his fantastic customer support. He called me at home last Monday, and by Friday morning I had a replacement speaker delivered to my door. It's great to see this kind of support, and to have a company back their products the way Adam does. Now my "studio" is up and rockin' again... and I'm back to making bad music! So thanks again to Andy, Adam, and to all who replied! Dan |
